TMBL United - Playoff Structure
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Aug. 18th, 2013 at 4:42 PM

Hi guys,

I'd like some quick thoughts on playoffs and how we should run it with our current setup.   When we had 24 teams we allowed the top 3 in each division (so 12 or 50%) of the teams to be in the playoffs.

I'm leaning towards having just the top 2 in each division make the playoffs (8 so 40% of the teams) or something similar where all division leaders make the playoffs and the two second best in each league make the playoffs.

Please provide your thoughts as we're nearing the halfway mark and I'd like to finalize our plan in the next week.

Thanks!

Al

Top 3 in each division would actually be 12 of the 20 teams, or 60% of the teams... please no!

I like the division winners pluse the next 2 best in the conference.

Agree on fewer is better!

Mike Cabral on Sunday, Aug. 18th, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Iagree with Rob Division winners and next best 2.

I concur

What Rob said.

I think winners + next best 2 makes the most competitive sense given how much we play the other teams in the league. Which is my own idea because on general principle I cannot ever fully agree with Rob.

Will there be a Minors Championship?

There appear to have been a few triple A world series in the past

Roy Rolsten on Thursday, Aug. 22nd, 2013 at 10:33 PM

You need an incentive to finish 1st.  The 2nd & 3rd rank teams in each division, play each other in the playoffs, with the winner playing 1st.  Top two teams from each division play for the conference championship, then we have the championship series between the top conference winners.  simples!

Thank you for all the feedback.  Its not all agreeing with one approach and that's fine.

Our playoff approach will be for the division winners and the two next best teams in that league making the playoffs.  As of september 2nd (if the season ended today) that would be:

ATLANTIC

Lakewood & Montgomery as division winners

Jamestown 28 wins and Wichita 27 wins are in (Rochester 25, Vermont 24, Jackson 23 are not in, but close)

PACIFIC

Hillsboro and Missoula/Las Vegas are in as division winners (only one of the latter is in as the div winner the other is one of the next two best)

Inland Empire with 28 wins is in as the 4th team

Out, but close are Cedar Rapids (25), Eugene (24), and Tri City with 23 wins.

Will the minors have playoffs?

Mike Cabral on Saturday, Sep. 21st, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Yes on Minor League playoffs...same format (division winners plus two best teams in that "League").

I need help with Roster Rules, otherwise, what's to prevent a team from dumping their top talent to the minors just to "win" the minor league playoffs?

Allan Sellers on Saturday, Sep. 21st, 2013 at 8:19 PM

I think there should be an SL cap on the minor leagues (45?) and a cut-off for roster moves. No moves in the last 2 weeks of the season?

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Sep. 21st, 2013 at 9:22 PM

I would go on G/GS and PA played in the minors. 20/10 for pitchers.

Roy Rolsten on Monday, Sep. 23rd, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Roy... I'm not following.. are you saying that a player can't have more than 20 G or 10 GS to play in the Minor League playoffs? If so, that would eliminate nearly all my actual minor league players...

Rob Peterson on Tuesday, Sep. 24th, 2013 at 3:46 PM

I was thinking minimum quota required in minors - I.e. 10 GS for a sp and 20ish G for rp but any player not having appeared in the majors automatically qualify

Ah, I see now. That's an interesting idea. I don't know if it would place hardships on those managers who have been balancing players between Majors and Minors...

Rob Peterson on Tuesday, Sep. 24th, 2013 at 9:26 PM

The minor league playoffs will have the following roster rules:

a) As many A, AA, AAA players as they wish (no matter their SL)
b) Up to 5 Age I and older players whose have no skills higher than 9.

For rule #b, if a player is Age I or older and has skills like 10-9-9-9 he is ineligible.

If he's 9-9-9-9 he is eligible.

Couple of questions:

1) How will playoff seeding work?

Assume #1 faces #4, #2 faces #3 in each division.

If so, what happens if best wild card has better record than a division winner?  Is that wild card seeded no higher than #3 as a WC, or could they be #1 or #2 based on record?  Basically, do Div winners get preference, even if worse record than WC (that is how MLB works)?

2) How will roster management work?  Do we have to establish a "playoff roster" by some point/date? Or can players continue to move freely from majors to minors?

Thanks!

Mike Cabral on Tuesday, Oct. 1st, 2013 at 2:20 PM

I'll send an email C-Ball.  Regarding seeding I will seed division winners 1 and 2 and then wild cards based on record.
