TMBL United Season 2 - Auctions & Draft
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Aug. 18th, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Hi guys,

A couple of quick conversation topics for next season.  I'm planning to introduce the following:

Player Draft

The intent of this is to have a pre-season draft based on how a team finished the previous season.  The number of rounds are TBD.  I'm thinking between 1 and 5.  The players would be ALL youth players (A, AA, AAA).   The order is based on wins/losses the previous season (worst record picks first, best record picks last).

Auction

Auctions will occur during the first X (X is TBD) sessions of the season.   We will be integrating finances into the game based on comments/contributions this season and going forward (along with a base amount of money).

Teams can then bid on players available to improve their teams.

I'd like your ideas/feedback on the above in terms of seeing how we can get into further details.

Remember that next season I don't intend teams to be as 'static' as this season in that we will start seeing injuries.  So some level of depth will be helpful to have.   Somewhere in the mix here too we need to determine 'how' to allow teams to sign youth players on their own like being able to 'discover' all SL 2 players whenever they'd like.

The above needs some discussion so that's why we didn't put it in this season.

DRAFT

Drafting 5 rounds sounds reasonable to me. We won't really know what we need long term yet, and we won't for a couple seasons, so we should plan to re-evaluate in say Season 4 or 5. I think draftees should have an SL range from "mediocre" to "potential studs"

A = SL 2 - 4    (potential to start AA as 5 - 7, potential to start AAA as 8 - 10, potential to start I as 11 - 13)
AA = SL 3 - 5  (potential to start AAA as 6 - 8, potential to start I as 9 - 11)
AAA = SL 6 - 8  (potential to start I as 8 - 11)

With a "A" player being able to start at SL 4, you have the potential for Miggy Cabrera to appear. It should be very rare that a player with 4/4/4/4 talent comes along, but a 2/4/2/4 might not be out of the realm of possibilities.

I think the "superstars" should only come from the "A" level... make managers work for it.

Auctions

Auction players should be all non-youth. It should be thought of like the Yoenis Cespedes and Diasuke Matsuzakas out there, where they are non-American players who have been playing in foreign leagues for a number of years and are now coming to the US via free agency, and teams have to bid for the right to sign the player. SL should work out where some players could be All-Star calibre, There should be more Dice-Ks than Cespedes' out there, but there should be the chance for a Cespedes to appear in an auction.

I don't see anything inherently wrong about any of this.

I'm not so sure about excluding minor league players from the Auctions - all other Olmec games allow the purchase of youth - admittedly they don't have a second feeder team (the minors) or a Draft. All the real Major League teams have more than one minors team so they have bigger pool of players to call upon to cover for injury etc.

But I think you'd have to limit the number available (like other Olmec sites) so maybe only 2 minors players per auction. If we went with something like that I'd like to suggest a more broader position per auction player. By that I mean player i) is a baseman ii) outfielder etc and then the winning bidder can define to Al that they are 1B or 2B or 3B etc  Unlike football there are a lot more specific player positions!

One of the differences Roy is that there is no auction for baseball outside of foreign-players who are already established in their leagues (Cuban, Korean, Japanese...) and want to come over to America. In MLB, ALL other players are brought up through the draft system.

With a 5-round draft every season, we'll be introducing quite a good crop of youth players. On top of that, Al will be putting in a system where you will be able to "discover" new youth players throughout the season (most likely starting at 2/2/2/2 like SBYs in United).

Al, you couldn't find the U L "Toothpick" Washington card?

Rob Baptiste on Tuesday, Aug. 20th, 2013 at 7:03 AM

One caution re: draft is the time commitment.  Not sure if it will work like in prior TMBL iterations, but those drafts were hard to attend.  Many fewer round here, so probably OK, but just putting it out there for those with crazy lives/schedules.

Could it be like UNITED where we just add youth, rather than draft them?  I guess we would not get varied SL that way, so maybe this is better.  Just thinking it through, with emphasis on the fact that drafts can be hard to attend.  Maybe some automated way to put in and process a draft list (don't want to make more work for you, Al, just thinking aloud)?

Mike Cabral on Tuesday, Aug. 20th, 2013 at 3:16 PM

A draft list of available players would be easy to compile and post. Then you could send in your lisk of preference or rank them all and one person could the whole draft of 5 rounds (I like that number, Al) in one sitting. Conditionals could be added or just a master list. I'd even volunteer to run it and help set the players list up for balance with some stud potential thrown in if desired.

I agree that the draft should be youth. Auctions should be age 1+. I think 3 or 4 players per auction would be a good start, with no more than one top talent per session and the others being average to good so they are worth a penny or two for either depth or a stop-gap until the youth can take over the following season.

One issue that raises is team size. Two questions:

Will the minor roster have no team size limit so we can store depth there?

Will we have a Disabled List (15 or 60-day or both?) to free up space on the Majors roster if we need to promote a player and then also trade/buy/find a minors player to make sure that team has enough players as well?

Kevin Martin on Thursday, Aug. 22nd, 2013 at 3:51 AM

I am happy with the two ideas in this thread as proposed by Al.  It's sounds like a five round draft would be fairly easy to manage, we can all condition the draft orders.

I think Kevin has made a good point regarding the minor roster size limit.  I think you need some limit, but maybe increase the roster limit by 10 spots.

Maybe you can limit the amount of "A" players discovered in a season.  Something like 5.

Chris McDougall on Sunday, Aug. 25th, 2013 at 11:33 AM

I definitely agree with limiting the number of "A" players that can be discovered in one season. I don't think we need a limit on the minor league roster though... remember these minor league teams are representing what MLB teams normally put into 3-6 different minor league affiliates.

At some point in the season, Al will open the Major league rosters up to 40 players. So that's going to mean that teams can move up to 15 players up from the Minor league team... so I think we'll need roster space for somewhere between 40-50 players on the minor league teams. Now, realistically, I really don't see any team carrying that many minor league players.
