League Alignment
Posted by Allan Sellers on Sunday, Apr. 17th, 2011 at 12:44 AM

We will have 24 teams.

I'm thinking something like two "leagues" (of even strength; there's no 1st division/2nd division here like in soccer/football).

Each league has either two 6-team divisions or 4-three team divisions.

And do we want to break it out so that the folks outside the USA are mostly in their own 12-team league?  Its not a requirements at all.  Just an idea.

Thoughts?

I say we do 2 divisions of 6 per league. This allows for more movement within the divisions, so there should be more fighting for the positions come playoff time.

I also would prefer to mix up the more-knowledgable guys with the less-knowledgeable. If we stacked all of the guys with the baseball knowledge in one division/league, then I think we'd lose some of the appeal. Think the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, and Phillies all in one division compared to the Royals, Orioles, Astros, Nationals and *sigh* the Mets in another division. It's almost not fair to the group in the first division that half of them have to miss the playoffs to teams in the second division that they would normally be better than.

I agree with Rob on both points.

For divisional alignment, we could do something completely crazy and go with a regional lineup. Since we're doing real teams, we have real locations we can utilize and with 2 exceptions (Toledo Mud Hens and the Great Lakes Loons), a geographic alignment fits very nicely. Here's an option:

Atlantic League

Northeast division:
===============
Jamestown Jammers (NY) - Max Sellers
Lakewood Blue Claws (NJ) - Rob Peterson
Portland Sea Dogs (ME) - Rob Baptiste
Toledo Mud Hens (OH) - Derek Purvis
Trenton Thunder (NJ) - Brent Hermack
Vermont Lake Monsters (VT) - Roy Rolsten

Southeast Division:
===============
Birmingham Barons (AL) - Jonathan Miles
Charlotte Knights (NC) - Aires Martins Jr
Charlotte Stone Crabs (FL) - Mike Cabral
Clearwater Threshers (FL) - Brian Beerman
Montgomery Biscuits (AL) - James Tucker
New Orleans Zephyrs (LA) - Dave Dowson

Pacific League

Northwest Division:
===============
Cedar Rapids Kernels (IA) - Dave Dohm
Eugene Emeralds (OR) - John Holden
Great Lakes Loons (MI) - Andy Bate
Missoula Osprey (MT) - Kevin Martin
Tacoma Rainiers (WA) - James White
Tri City Dust Devils (WA) - Peter Babcock

West Division:
===========
Fresno Grizzlies (CA) - Chris McDougall
Inland Empire 66ers (CA) - Jay Wilkins
Las Vegas 51s (NV) - Phil McIntosh
Modesto Nuts (CA) - Al Sellers
Orem Owlz (UT) - Adam Meney
Stockton Ports (CA) - James Andrew

Rob's idea sounds good, and I like the regional idea.

The top two in each division into the play offs perhaps?.

I hate to have to say this but Rob 'Shadey' Peterson has come up with one hell of a plan there & has my approval! Now you wont hear that too often!

Dave Dowson on Monday, Apr. 18th, 2011 at 11:59 AM

Rob did the work on this and got it right.  No reason to look for another divisional option -- this works great in my opinion.

Brian Beerman on Monday, Apr. 18th, 2011 at 1:35 PM

I would move Orem to the Northwest division and then move Cedar Rapids to the West division in order to balance out the teams which just do not fit in geographically.

Other than that it fits in very well with MiLB - two leagues, one east, one west. :)

John Holden on Tuesday, Apr. 19th, 2011 at 9:47 PM

Phil moved to Wichita over Las Vegas.  Rob, does that change your alignment?  Does John's change make sense or do respectfully disagree?

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Apr. 24th, 2011 at 1:18 AM

Orem, UT is definitely in the West. I don't question that one - Utah fits in nicely with the West division. Cedar Rapids, on the other hand, doesn't fit in anywhere.. I would recommend we keep Cedar Rapids in the Northwest. It's extremely close to Great Lakes (MI), so the two of them really should be in the same division. The current "Northwest" division is really 4 teams in the geographic Northwest, and the 2 teams in the "Midwest".

Wichita over Las Vegas... If we were doing 4 team divisions, yes it would change things as it's closer to Cedar Rapids and Great Lakes than it is anything else. I could go either way here. We could do two things:

1. Keep Wichita in the West as it is further west geographically than Cedar Rapids.
     WEST
     Fresno
     Inland
     Wichita
     Modesto
     Orem
     Stockton

2. Move Wichita to a newly renamed "Luisiana Purchase" division (or, we keep it named "Northwest"). This would put 3 teams from the same geographic area in the same division (Wichita, Cedar Rapids, Great Lakes). To accomodate this, the Eugene Emeralds would move to the West division, with the reason being that it is the furthest south of the other 4 teams in the Northwest.
     NORTHWEST
     Cedar Rapids
     Wichita
     Great Lakes
     Missoula
     Tacoma
     Tri City

     WEST
     Fresno
     Inland
     Eugene
     Modesto
     Orem
     Stockton

I think Eugene belongs in the West, but I think Wichita belongs with Cedar Rapids and Great Lakes more. So, I recommend we go with Option 2.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Apr. 24th, 2011 at 3:10 PM

Respectfully disagree. I think now ya' either have to do a "Pacific" and "Frontier" division or a "North" and "South" division.

In any case ya' gotta have Eugene in the northwest division. They're in the Northwest League in real life!

Pacific

Tacoma
Eugene
Stockton
Modesto
Fresno
Inland

Frontier
Orem
Missoula
Wichita
Great Lakes
Cedar Rapids
Tri-Cities

OR

North
Tacoma
Eugene
Tri-Cities
Missoula
Orem
Great Lakes

South
Modesto
Stockton
Fresno
Inland
Wichita
Cedar Rapids
