Quick Draft Primer
Posted by Mike Cabral on Sunday, Apr. 24th, 2011 at 2:10 PM

How the draft works, Cliff notes version:

1) At its most basic level, the draft is how we aquire our players and build our teams.  You are basically trying ot pick the best players out there, especially in the earliest rounds.

2) There are different schools of though on "take the best available player" or "take the best player at a position you do not yet have covered."  My take on these first few rounds is to take the best available player and then worry about filling out all positions later.  Not everyone will agree with me there.

3) For these first three rounds, you will get to pick three players, as will the other 23 teams.  That means 72 players will be chosen in the first three rounds (24 teams x 3 rounds).  So,we are basically looking at the best 72 players coming off the board in those first three rounds.

4) This means your draft list should include as many as 72 players,. since other teams will picking many of the guys you desire as the draft moves along. For example, almost everyone would have Albert Pujols at the topof their list or close.  But once someone takes him, he is off the board and unavailable to you.,  So, when your pick comes up, even though you may have Pujols at #1, he is gone,so you move on to your #2 (or 3,4,5, etc) choice until the top player on your list in one who is still available.  It sounds more confusing than it is!

5) In the early rounds, especially if you subscribe to my draft strategy in #2, your list will look a lot like the top 72 players in baseball, regardless of position. Resources on the Internet that I mentioned in another post will help here.

6)  It gets tricker as the draft moves along, when you are trying to fill in positions you don't yet have, may already have enough guys at a given positions, etc.   At that point, it may be that an outfielder (OF) looks like the best guy currently still available for drafting, but you alreday have 3 OFs (the number you need in your active lineup).  So you may instead choose a catcher (C), if that's a position you do not have filled yet.  He may not be as good as the OFs that are still available, but he fill a spot that you still need (you need 1 catcher in your lineup).

That's all for now.  I will post more and/or feel free to emai/message me.
