Shadey's Grades
Posted by Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Apr. 27th, 2011 at 6:52 PM

One of the fun things about the draft is that sometimes Robert Tiberius Peterson (Lakewood Blue Claws) will grade the draft for each team.  I don't know if Boston Rob can do that for all 24 teams but hopefully we'll see some form of this after session 1.

Here's a snippet of some grades from a previous season...

Providence Waterfires

Keepers
Hanley Ramirez SS Best offensive SS in the game (this should speak volumes coming from a huge Jose Reyes fan).
Carlos Lee OF Top-5 hitter - BOS was dumb to trade this guy to PRV last year.
Chase Utley 2b Undisputed heavyweight champion of 2nd base. Brandon Phillips is the closest thing to competition to Utley and it's not even a fair fight.
Garrett Atkins 3b Solid all-around player. Should be great for years to come.
Ryan Howard 1b Can you believe that Ryan Howard is the 5th best hitter on this team?? 47 HRs will look real nice cleaning up.
Cole Hamels SP 7th best pitcher in the league. An excellent keeper. Another dumb move by BOS in trading this guy to PRV last year.
Rich Hill SP BOS continues to make dumb moves. C-Ball was set to throw Hill back into the FA pool until Shadey reminded him of how good his stats were last year.

Needs
RP This team has enough offense that they can hold off on hitters for a while. Some strong RPs would make this team complete early on in the draft.
SP Add a couple decent starters behind Hamels and Hill and this team will be a menace day-in and day-out.
?? Who cares... this team is loaded...

Draft Rounds 1-4
Chad Billingsley SP/RP 1-14 (14) A Can be used either as a starter or as a reliever. One of the best pitchers in the draft. Has potential to be a long-term keeper.
Barry Zito SP 2-1 (15) A+ Another great pickup here. Throwing Zito out as your #3 or 4 starter with the numbers he had last year is scary good.
Rafael Soriano RP 3-14 (42) B+ There were too many relievers available higher ranked than Soriano, which is why this isn't an "A". However, Soriano is an excellent reliever and will keep batters befuddled for most of the season.
Jason Hirsh SP 4-1 (43) B+ Not a bad 4th/5th starter. A double-edged sword here. As a 5th starter, Hirsh is an excellent choice. However, that means that Billingsley is not going to be used as a reliever, which means that Mike has addressed his entire starting rotation and only has 1 reliever to finish games out. If Billingsley is to be used as a reliever, then Hirsh becomes the #4 starter, and a 4th starter with only 483 PA will need help to survive the season.

Overall Grade
A Be afraid... be very afraid. The best keeper list in the league just got some good pitching help.

Everything I post has gamesmanship considerations.  This post is no different.  As good a drafter as Michael Cabral is, shouldn't he be the favorite to win it all and anything less is a disappointment?

I'm just sayin'...

LOL  Love the analysis from Shadey.

By the way, are we starting a keeper league here or do we draft from scratch year on year?

Andy Bate on Thursday, Apr. 28th, 2011 at 12:03 AM

Yes, Rob is VERY good at this.   :-)  At the beginning of season 2, each manager can elect 5 players to keep for next season (from their season 1 roster).

Exciting. Scary. Educational.

Cool!

@Al: Ah, I hadn't been worrying about keeper league stuff with my first list.  Ah well, no time to change things now.  Much easier for me to consider that sort of thing with an AmFoot league.

Andy Bate on Thursday, Apr. 28th, 2011 at 12:42 AM

Andy - I wouldn't worry "too" much about keeper needs with the first handful of picks. Nearly every player drafted in the top 100 will be great bets to be keepers for Season 2.

Rob Peterson on Thursday, Apr. 28th, 2011 at 2:20 AM

As you say, "nearly every", but I had Adam Wainwright at #4 on my shortlist which I might have changed had I realised he'd had Tommy John.

Mind you, the fact that I had him above Roy Halladay shows how much of a rush I was in and a mess I was making!

Honestly...season 1 will be a learning/re-learning experience for us all.  Including me.  There are things about the game I probably need to tell you guys, but I haven't actively coded for this game in abour 3 years.  And my memory isn't so good.  With that in mind I kept the protection number low (5) knowing that while it can be nice to have a quicker draft with more players already on the roster (ie in season 2), I didn't want to hand out too many advantages.

One thing about TMBL is we sort of strive for each manager to "reproduce" their glory.  Otherwise a team could latch onto a large number of pretty good players and have the ability to carry that out long term.

Season 1 isn't necessarily a beta, but it kind of is for me...lots to do...lots I want to add...but we probably all won't have a great feel for everything until we get this season under our belt.
