Walked In?
Posted by Jonathan Miles on Friday, Jul. 8th, 2011 at 3:15 PM

Please could someone advise me. In an alarming number of games I seem to have given away 'walked in' runs. Shouldn't this be extremely rare? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for anyone's advice.

I wouldn't expect it to be "extremely rare". What should probably be rare is for it to happen in more than one inning in a given game or for a pitcher who is walking consecutive batters to remain on the mound for long.

Hi Jonathan, just to clarify, the code just determines a walk.  It doesn't differentiate between if a player should walk with the bases empty or the bases load.  So think of it as a singular event.

For your team, you have one horrible reliever named Randy Choate…well maybe not horrible, but he is for this walk scenario.

His vs. RHB stats are such that he gave up 9 walks to the 49 batters he faced last season (TPA).

So every time he pitches its roughly a 20% chance he'll walk the batter.  That's pretty bad and I think he was the one who walked in a player in a recent game with the bases loaded.

Its not all him, but, you definitely don't want him in your profile under setup/closer vs. RHB.   He's good against LHBs though...

Your team has one of the higher WHIP (Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched) numbers, so I would suspect you have a higher number of walks.

Additionally, a team can/will give up a boatload of walks IF either:

a) They have too many relievers that are too tired and a reliever has to pitch too much (as they go way past their Avg PAs in a game, the walk possibility escalates).

b) Same as a, but its an extra inning game that is in say the 13-15th inning and your team (and the opposition probably) are out of relievers.  Similar to a, a player goes over their avg PAs and the walks become more common.

I don't think either of the above are pertinent to you (at least not b as you have only been in 1 extra inning game).

Many thanks, that helps. I will start by shooting Choate, then look at what else I can do.

"Singular event" is key because it does seem that compared to regular baseball that this game will walk a batter at the worst times quite often.  Quite often a fairly good reliever will come in and walk a batter right away. I don't mind if Mitch Talbot walks 6 in a game but it drives me nuts when Billy Wagner comes in a tosses a walk to a LHB.

Al just doesn't like you RobB. =)

It does seem to happen a lot more than what I remember from "real" baseball games.

But maybe it just "seems"...
