Season 2 - Actual Ballparks
Posted by Allan Sellers on Monday, Apr. 2nd, 2012 at 11:01 PM

One new feature we can implement for season 2 is using actual Major League Baseball ballparks for each team.  Candidly I'm not sure what the best approach for us will be.  Do the worst to first teams pick their ballparks in that order?  Since we're going worst to first in the draft do the ballparks get divvied out first to worst?

The concept is that each ballpark, for example has a rating for left handed and right handed hitters in terms of how they do in this park versus the major league average.  For example in one park the number for right handed hitters hitting singles might be 120.  That means, on average, 20% more singles are hit at this park than the average park.

Similarly, Coors Field in Denver has these ratings for right-handed and left-handed hitters, respectively, for homers: 127 and 124.  What that means is this...if you are stocked with HR hitters, you will do VERY well at Coors field.  And if its your home field and you are stocked with HR hitters you will do VERY, VERY, VERY well at Coors Field.

With all that said I'm open to how we implement this.    Let's get your thoughts please.

I assume we're using last season's ground stats and after the current season Citi-field will be re-jigged to show the fences have been brought in? (Mets are 3-0 so far this season!)

Roy I believe Mr. Shadey Peterson probably has the switch to move the fences in when the Mets are at bat.  I'm not aware of that configuration option in our new simulator.  :-)

Well, my two cents (to use the U.S version of the phrase) is that, if you think about it, when a team builds a new stadium, they design it to their current - or perhaps their historical - strengths. That being the case, it's right we should get some say in which type of park we want.

Also, is it reasonable to expect a 50:50 split on people wanting hitters' parks to those wanting pitchers' parks?

Anyway, how about:

1. We all submit a list of all parks in preferred order.

Round 1

2. Working from worst-to-first, each team gets its first choice immediately if no other team wants that park as first choice.

3.  From all teams wanting a particular park as first choice, a random but weighted selection is made. Formula to slightly favour a worse team over a better team.

Round 2

Repeat as with round 1 but looking at second choice parks only.

etc.

Haven't thought that through too deeply, so maybe it's a fail, but the ball is rolling!

Thanks for the feedback James, I appreciate it.   In order to keep the schedule moving to get this season underway, I opted to go the random route (given that teams will get to keep their parks for 3 seasons and the ability for a majority vote to cause a full re-draft of parks).   At that future date, I'd be open to considering something different such as your approach.

Given that the player draft will be worst-to-first I opted not to go with ballparks in the same fashion as it sort of put a season 1 worst-to-first approach in place for 3 (or more) seasons.  Again though I'll be open to a different approach/more discussion down the road.

Just an idea but perhaps the ball parks that are not selected this year, could be made available for Season 3, if you decide you wish to swop from say a big hitting team to a team that relies more on your pitchers.

Matt Cooper on Tuesday, Apr. 10th, 2012 at 7:47 PM

That's correct Matt.  Essentially after this draft we'll have 6 ballparks that go undrafted.    Here's what I've got crafted for the rules on this...

Ballparks

After season 4 we will vote to determine:

a)            Should all ballparks be “re-drafted”: yes or no?

b)            If the majority says “no” we will allow anyone who wants to, to put their ballpark back in the hat and re-draft using all the real-life parks available.

c)             If the majority says “yes” we will re-draft all ballparks.
