Game Engine Basic Flowchart
Posted by John Holden on Monday, Dec. 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM

- Does there need to be a pitching change or substitution?

- Is there some sort of managerial condition (hit and run, stolen base) at work?

(Pitcher ready to go)

- Is the ball not hit in play?

Hit Batter

Walk

Strikeout

Stolen Base

Wild Pitch/Passed Ball

- Is the ball hit in play?

- What is the trajectory of the ball?

Fly Ball

Line Drive

Hard Grounder

Weak Grounder

- To whom is the ball hit?

Position

- Does the fielder have the ability to make a play?

Ground ball up the middle vs. ground ball right at the shortstop

- Do the runners move? If so, are any of them out?

A lot of tabletop baseball games deal with these factors using CHARTS

which basically is a rundown of percentages, but it greatly simplifies the process

You generate a random number, check the chart based on what that number says, and then run a subroutine based on what the chart says, opposed to figuring everything out based on the situation.

Usually the first roll is figuring out whose card to use - the pitchers card or the batters card - this is a 50% chance

For instance, if you roll a 1, 2, or 3 you look at the batters' card; a 4, 5, 6 goes to the pitcher's card. This number may be significant for the charts as well.

I remember Avalon Hill's Baseball Strategy game - great for solo play - sad old me!

I would think that a lot of the game play engine would simply be ported from the original TMBL. That seemed to work very well.
