Draft Pitcher question
Posted by Roy Rolsten on Sunday, Apr. 29th, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Can someone remind me roughly what GS/G totals I should be looking at hitting for my SP and RP for the season?

i know it's 600 PA for the batters, but can't remember what was the recommended levels for pitching we had last season.

For the pitchers, I'm not really looking at the GS/G. For usage #s, I'm going off of PA.

Hi Roy: The game uses "PA" in terms of whether to tell if a pitcher has been overused.  But PAs are a little more variable for pitchers in terms of coming up with a good recommendation (though someone...please do!).  :-)

If you get starting pitchers totaling 160+ GS you should be fine.

If you get relievers about 350+ relief appearances (so "G") you should be in good shape.

But again if someone has a PA "roster recommendation" level for SP and relievers please add it to this thread.

I don't know if any of us truly know what is the "right" thing, but this what I've got thus far:

Pitcher GS PA
Matt Cain 33 907
Tommy Hanson 22 540
Jair Jurrjens 23 627
Ervin Santana 33 949
Max Scherzer 33 833

Total 144 3856
Avg 28.8 771.2

I've got 1 pitcher (Scherzer) that should last the season with no problems. I've got 2 pitchers (Cain / Santana) that, barring a random injury, will definitely not have any usage problems.

But then there's Hanson and Jurrjens... both got hurt last year in the MLB, much to Kevin Martin's chagrin I assume, so their PAs are lower than I what I would expect. I feel that these two pitchers will not last a full season. I am planning on getting another pitcher to round things out. Someone along their 20-25 GS / 550 - 650 PA range.

That will bring me up to ~165 GS and ~4400 PA.
