My game Sunday
Posted by Matt Cooper on Sunday, Jul. 8th, 2012 at 8:46 PM

In my game this sunday im losing as usual but in my last innings with 2 outs my pitcher is up to bat, can anyone explain why there's no pinch hitter inserted this has happened to me on a few games this season in more critical situation than this Sundays game can anyone shed any light on how i can rectify this in my profile.

On a 2nd point can anyone explain how to get my closers into the game more often?

Thanks

Matt

For your lineup where the opposing starting pitcher is a LHP, you have no pinch hitters listed against a RHP (in this case Lindstrom) who worked the 9th for NOZ.   It may help listing them.   Not saying the game would never pinch hit for your team in this situation...but it may help.

You had used 11 of the 13 position (non pitching) players at this point.   So two were left.  It does seem like the game could have found one of them to put in.  Again, ensuring you have 5 pinch hitters for both sides of the lineups may help.

For Closers, the help file says:

Closers. Closers are generally used in the eighth or ninth inning when the team has a lead in a close game, but will also be used in other situations when required.

The thing is that you need to typically be leading by a run or two, maybe three for the closer to come in.  They often won't in other scenarios unless they are on another list like setup/long/mopup.

Also, if your close has thrown on multiple days in a row (or more than an inning) often they'll be rested in the next game and tend not to throw.

I'd recommend looking at WHIP as a good predictor of how to structure your team.  The lowest WHIP the better (you can see it on the team page by going to the Stats-Real tab then pitching then sort by WHIP).  I'd suggest a rotation more like: Romero, Zimmerman, Gallardo, Garcia, Oswalt.

Is that a big difference...probably not.   Maybe look at the same WHIP for your relievers...again that may not change much.

So...I don't think there are horrific trends here where you are doing multiple things wrong at all...it may just be some of the matchups against the other teams.

See if any of the position players on the bench might improve your fielding (which again isn't bad) by adding a defensive replacement at a given position.  Or take advantage of a platoon situation where you start Dobbs vs. a LHP, but bring in Seager as the 3b player when they bring in a RHP reliever later.

Plus your team isn't pitching badly lately allowing about 3 runs a game...so there is improvement there.

Others may have additional thoughts...feel free to ask more questions.

Another observation...I turned my stealing down from More Frequent to Neutral before the Sun/Mon games.  Previously I was getting thrown out a lot.  But over the two games I had 9 SB and 2 CS which was a big improvement.

Dialing down some tendencies (if it seems you are getting thrown out or picked off the bases for example) may help.

Cheers Al,

Food for thought to be honest id be switching the pitchers around until i found a combo that was working well, will have a look at the rest and see what i could alter.
