One month in...
Posted by Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Jul. 17th, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Now that we're about a month into the season I'd like you guys to weigh in on your impressions of the overall setup.  We've gone from seasons where we used our own simulator to one where we have an off the shelf program.

Try to get past how your team is doing (winning or losing) and comment on the overall setup.  What you like, what's okay, and what you'd like to see improved (and how).  I'll try to take this into account going forward.

What's different for the better?  What's different for the worse?

Thanks!

Al

The only thing I miss is the day to day management versus the current weekly setup.  That's not a complaint, and I know that issue will be resolved in time.  But that's what I notice.

My wife notices that I spend less time on the games this season, ao her favortie part of the set up this season is the weekly management versus the day to day setup.

Oh, and overall, I find the game much more responsive to my managerial tendencies and the overall gameplay is much more realistic in my opinion.

I definitely like the new simulator better.  It seems like it is more detailed and realistic than our old simulator.  I know there is a lot involved with running games and loading data this year, but I miss games not being run everyday.  I also miss the ability to do daily management changes.

I can't stand the fact that my team is doing so poorly. Oh wait, were we not supposed to talk about that? =) I had a lot of pride in the old simulator since a few of us put a lot of work into. With that said, I really like the new simulator. It's more complete and in-depth than what we had prior. My wish list would be: 1) Daily games: I think we all understand that as long as the games have to be manually run, that daily games is not an option. Could there be a way to automate them like with the old simulator? 2) Starting Lineups in the play-by-play: I usually click straight to the PbP link. When I do that, I have no idea who's in the lineup, and more importantly, who's pitching, until they show up in the output. I know that these are stock reports that are generated. Would it be possible to take the starting linup, and insert it at the top of the PbP output?

Wow... sorry for the bad formatting... looks like none of my line breaks were recognized.

Typical of your season, Rob. One bad break after another.

Very happy with the new stuff so far...my team is another story.

Some sort of viewer would be tops on my wishlist.  Alternatively, even a PbP display that somehow allows for scrolling one batter at a time.  Even if I make the window super duper small, I still get multiple batters on a slight scroll or single down-arrows click, so there's no way to really follow a game.

Thanks for all the work, Al!

Wasnt around last season so cant really comment,  can see have seen some nice suggestions above?

Love the new sim with regard to greater variables and possible outcomes on each play. Report as to kind of hits and location, etc. are very nice as well.  Managerial choices and program responsiveness to those is also good.

Negative: no debug output. We all know it's using real life numbers vs. opponent real life numbers.  What impacts those in given situations is what's missing. Some players appear to be favored heavily over other players with similar or even near-identical hitting/slugging stats vs. same-handedness.  Guess it's time to dig into Zone Rating or wOBA or "clutch" factor more to see if I can get a better feel for what goes in any given at-bat.  It's pretty easy to value the stars correctly.  It's the mid-range and situational players that I'm having a lot harder time assigning value to for future drafts.

Also negative:

It appears that this program does not allow anti-Dave Dohm cheat codes to be put into place. This needs to be fixed before next season.

I will say I am enjoying this season much more than the last. To be fair though I enjoyed the first half of the season to date much more than the second half of the season. Stupid Nuts.

I did up a Usage Analysis for the first month of games - I'll forward it to Al for posting. Interesting stuff.
