Press Rules

Taken from the Press officers post on January 28th.

Clyde & Calvin are here for their annual review to discuss the participation bonus and how it is awarded. Please listen closely, because inevitably many questions will crop up every season that are answered right here. Here we go...

What is the purpose of the participation bonus?

The bonus, also referred to as the "party bonus," is provided to encourage positive dialogue an conversation among SESL managers. It provides a substantial income to managers who participate frequently and substantially throughout the season, and becomes a competitive disadvantage to teams that do not participate. SESL is more fun for everyone when managers interact and converse. Some feel like winning takes a back seat to the relationships that are built here. (Not to be confused with "winning a relationship in the back seat.")

Quantity vs. Quality

--the age old debate.

Honestly, you need both. But if one has to have priority over the other, substance wins. Clyde & Calvin reward creativity and uniqueness, regardless of quantity. If you are original and contribute positively to the direction of the discussion on the boards, you will see a spike in your bonus. The best example of "quality" remains Kevin Hull's stickmen posts from many years ago, and the spinoffs that CLY and a few other managers made in that regard. Everyone looked forward to press just to see what Kevin would post with his stick ment that week. Other examples include starting a productive discussion about the harmful effects upon the game of allowing GK's to play aggressive, or advice to other managers of the risks of carrying two high SL SW's on your roster. Statistical analysis is also important (see below).

As far as "quantity" goes, it does make a difference to see managers posting frequently, even daily, on the blog or journal. However, if you are simply posting one line comments affirming what somebody else said or replying to a comment, do not expect great rewards. You will be rewarded, but the cats do not simply tally the number of posts and hand the winner 50k. There must be merit to your posts.

Statistical Analysis

This is heavily rewarded, and is often seen in the form of an auction preview or auction analysis (thank you Mark Boland of DUU). Please bear in mind that "statistical analysis" does not incorporate reprinting text from matches or other pages in the SESL community. Those things are helpful, but rewarded differently.

What does the Participation Bonus cover?

Please listen carefully here, because this is the one question that always arises later: the participation bonus includes involvement on the Blog and Journal pages. It does not include the SESL forum or pre- and post-match commentary.

Award Amounts

The top award for any given bonus period is 50k. Sometimes there will be multiple 50k winners if the participation level demands it. During slow periods of uninspired postings, the top award may be less than 50k. The judging is done on a curve. What qualifies for 50k this week, may not meet that mark next week. Generally, the cats like to award one 50k winner and let the runners up squabble over 40k and below.

The award is purely arbitrary. There is no magical formula for awarding the party bonus. If you post frequently, and have positive, substantial press that generates discussion on the boards, you will do well.

Negative Posts

It is not our place to discipline unruly or rude behavior on the blog or journal. That is the Commissioner's job. However, in the cases of extreme conduct that is blatantly out of order, especially in cases of personal attacks upon another manager or his pets, it will affect your bonus. This is not meant to deter aggressive banter on the blog or journal. It is also not meant to inhibit good natured taunting among managers. Those discussions add to the game.

Profanity is not permitted on the Blog or Journal. Please bear in mind when you post that younger fans may visit this site or participate as managers. The creator and keeper of these pages may chose to showcase these pages to potential employers. Should that happen, the last thing that we want them to see when they turn on the lights is a bunch of drunk hooligans using profanity and threatening to remove body parts from one another.

Complaints

Mistakes do happen. Fortunately, they have been proven to be both infrequent and easily correctable when made. The most common, but still rare, mistake occurs when transferring the bonus totals from paper to data entry on the computer. That's easily correctable, as the written record is saved. It is extremely rare, but not unheard of, that a manager's post will be completely overlooked.

Should this happen to you, please do not flood our mailbox with hateful suggestions of what we should do with our kin at our next family gathering. Do not send multiple messages outlining ways of shoving cooking utensils into certain parts of the body. And most certainly do not refer to our intelligence or family heritage with vulgarities while contacting us about the problem. Simply write a short note bringing to our attention the fact that you believe we may have overlooked your efforts or miscalculated you bonus. It is that simple. Posting complaints on the blog is generally not a fast way of resolving the issue, and may result in a public reply from the cats outlining all the reasons why they believe your efforts fell short, or which one of these general press rules you ignored. I think that Graham and Steve will attest that they received a positive result on previous inquiries with just a kind inquiry.

If you choose to contest the amount of your bonus, please be specific about the complaint. And also bear in mind that arguing for an award of 20k rather than 15k probably isn't that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things. The nature of the award is somewhat arbitrary in nature. It is a long season, and the participation bonus tends to balance out over time.

I'm sure we're leaving plenty of details out, but we'll leave it as it is for now. If you have any questions, just ask.

Meow,

Clyde & Calvin
