Prediction Competition

Season 21 sees the continuation of the Prediction League.
This is conducted on the [forum].

All predictions must be on forum 3 hours prior to a match deadline.
This is for fun and participation.

There will be 10 rounds in total over the course of this season 21, and team(s) with most points each individual week shall get 1CP.
If round winner tied, then ALL winning teams shall win 1CP.

All prizes will be awarded at Season's End.
If overall winners tied, then up to 10 teams in total can win cumulative awards, so again lower placed teams per league table may be deciding factor, (or at Commish discretion)

Newspaper

This section will be used to post and record interesting or controversial issues from the SESL league as judged by the Commish or Wiki Editor.

Press Rules

Taken from the Press officers post on July 22nd in Season 21.
Clyde & Calvin, your favorite felines of SESL, are here to offer helpful hints and suggestions for your press participation this season. Before you ask, no, this is not a reprint of the past three seasons. We just keep saying the same things over and over and over and nobody seems to listen. Be assured that within the first few weeks of the season someone will post an angry blog entry or send a flaming e-mail to Mark or Phil or both about an issue clearly addressed in this text. Sigh. That being said, let's get started. This doesn't encompass all SESL press rules, but it should come pretty close...

PRESS IS FUN--Easy enough?

  • SESL is fun.
  • Games are fun.
  • Soccer is fun.
  • Wheeeee....we're all having fun!

So don't ruin it by being a sour grape on the blog or journal page. Personal attacks, slurs and pouting are rarely well received, and they always end up poorly for the initiator. Usually with an apology, or resignation or suspension. Just don't do it. Also, keep in mind that insults to OLMEC are actually a slight to OLMEC's creator, Al Sellers.
He does a lot for you. Don't bite the hand that feeds OLMEC.

GRADING IS SUBJECTIVE

Can we be any more clear about this?
We don't have a magic ruler that measures the quality or value of each sentence you type. We read the press. We read all the press. We gauge the value of your contributions to the overall discussion on the boards. Sometimes you get less than you deserve. Sometimes you get more than you deserve. As a general rule, it all works out in the end. Steve, Dave, and Brian will tell you that consistent contributions will earn you a consistently high participation bonus. They will also tell you that they don't always get the top prize every week, even though they feel like they earned it. Hopefully, they'll also tell you that the system works and hateful blog posts or e-mails are not necessary or productive.
(Ed. confirms this)

QUALITY VS. QUANTITY

To make things easier, we've decided to award press points soley on the number of entries you have and words that you type. Ah, just kidding! Can you imagine how dry and stale that would become? And poor Graham McDermott gets carpal tunnel syndrome trying to stay one step ahead of Stewart Gordon. Seriously, don't get caught up in quantitiy. It is great to see you present on the blog throughout the week...perhaps even daily. That keeps the chatter flowing. BUT, please contribute meaningfully in the process. If you are not really advancing the conversation, your time may be better spent shelling peanuts in your cellar. It is not uncommon for one well written commentary or analysis to take the top prize even though other managers post far more frequently. Can I get a witness, Mark Boland?

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Keep it clean.
Younger fans view this site, and Al Sellers occasionally displays this site to his employer for evidence of his skills. The last thing he wants to see is a personal feud between two managers over whether BC needs a boost (Ed. it does), and he certainly doesn't want to see the F-bomb.
Clyde & Calvin rarely deduct points from your score, but profanity will do the trick. (Ed. Confirms this)

AMOUNTS

The top prize is 50K per period.
Sometimes no one will hit that mark. It seems like once a season, or maybe twice, the chatter really slows and nothing meaningful is said. If that's the case, the top prize may only be 40k. Sometimes multiple managers will win 50k. We do grade on the curve. What is good for top prize one week may be mediocre the next if everyone picks up the pace.

PERIODS

Press is graded throughout the season. Typically, you can expect an award every week to ten days. Grading is not easy and can be somewhat time consuming. We really do review each item. Our personal schedules (eat, sleep, litter box, eat, sleep, litter box, eat, sleep, Oprah, litter box) sometimes creates a variance in the grading period.

CREATIVITY

Kevin Hull will tell you that creative items wins big points from the cats. His stick men are legendary, but Phil's mockery of the stick men is classic literature. Let's face it, few managers really want to read a 1000 word recap of your last match. Some of that is okay, but creative items will be recognized.

STYLE

Managers do not receive a lot of extra credit for big type face or photos unless it REALLY adds to the meaning of the entry. In fact, some managers don't like it. Just be courteous in your typefaces, etc., and everyone will be fine.

BLOG VS. JOURNAL

  • Only the blog and journal count toward your participation bonus.
  • Pre- and post-match commentary is not included.

Please do not send an e-mail insulting our parentage because you weren't rewarded for your match commentary. Forum posts are also outside the scope of press awards.

MINIMUM PRESS

<p> THREE, 3 that's the number of press awards each manager must earn every season. If you don't, Clyde & Calvin have to do extra work to identify you and then they have to say bad things about you on the blog. THEN, Mark Creasey gets involved and people start resigning and....well, you get the picture.

That should be enough to get you started. It got us to our first 50k award anyway.  :-)

Meow,

Clyde & Calvin

Language Barrier Ruling

Al and Mark (Ed. Al Sellers, OLMEC GOD, Mark COMMISH) have been pretty clear since the beginning, that no manager should be penalized for language barriers.
If a manager struggles with English, that would put them at an immediate disadvantage to participate in the game.
Clyde & Calvin always grade more leniently when they know English is not your first language.
That being said, Stewart is correct. We probably need to post in a common language.
If English is a barrier for you, please let us know and we will adjust your scores accordingly.
