How do I win?

No one really has the answer to that question but it seems to be part strategy (recruitment, coaching), part tactics (team selection), and a large dose of luck.

What does a volleyball team look like? And what are the most important positions?

A team consists of seven players - one Libero (L), Setter (S) and Right Side (RS), and two Outside Hitters (OH) and Middle Blockers (MB). Players can only play in their assigned position. As a team, the positions are part of an interlocked system, so all are important. However, using the minimum values for players as a rough guide gives the order of importance as S, OH, RS, MB, L.

Is my team/squad any good?

Take a look at the Stats page. To see how good your team is, compared to other teams, check out the T7 column and, to see how good your squad is, review the T14 column. You can filter the results by Conference.

How do I assemble a winning team?

You recruit new players every season and they stay with you for four seasons before graduating (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior).

There are two recruitment paths - competitive and walk-on.

Competitive: at the start of the season a list of potential recruits is published, together with their position, star rating (3-5), whether they have a special attribute and when they become available to sign. During the course of the season you get the opportunity to express an interest in these players, invite them to your campus and, finally, bid to sign them using Recruiting Points (RPs). You can see how many RPs you and other teams have on the Stats page. Your bid must be at least equal to the minimum value for that player - which depends on their position and star rating. The first two stages (expressing an interest and inviting players to visit) both cost RPs (varying dependent on position and star rating) which you do not get back even if you are ultimately unsuccessful in recruiting the player.

Walk-on: at the end of the season you can recruit one free 3 star player, plus additional 1-3 star players at a cost significantly above minimum value. New coaches may also recruit an additional free 1 star player

How do I know which players to bid on?

You need to have a minimum of 16 players in your squad and, from these, you must have two Liberos, Setters and Right Sides and four Outside Hitters and Middle Blockers. That adds up to 14 players. The rest of the squad can be any position you want. The Recruiting Dashboard tells you which positions you must recruit for the coming season and/or how many more you need to have a full squad of 16.

How much should I bid on players?

This depends on how badly you want the player and how serious the competition is from other teams to secure him. You must bid at least minimum value but most 4 and 5 star players cost considerably more. Looking at historic bids will give some indication of likely costs. Note: regardless of how high a successful bid is, you only actually pay one more RP than the next highest bid.

How many players should I bid on?

As many as you feel you need to secure your squad for next season. But remember, for each unsuccessful bid, you will lose the RPs you spent expressing an interest and arranging a player visit. Too many unsuccessful bids can therefore be a shortcut to poverty.

Why wouldn’t you just recruit 5* players?

If you can, you should. However RPs are limited so you may have to make compromises. Knowing where to compromise for your individual team is likely to be key to your success.

How do I select my team?

You enter your team on the Orders page. For each match you must ensure you have seven players (one Libero, Setter and Right Side, and two Outside Hitters and Middle Blockers). Which seven players you should select depends on a number of factors: the importance of the match relative to other games you are playing that session (see CB’s helpful advice for each match), whether you think you can win, managing squad fitness, and how much experience your younger players need.

You receive 55 Coaching Points (CPs) each session. On top of that, you receive 1 additional CP for each set you won during the preceding session.

How do I get more experience points?

Players (other than Seniors) gain experience points (XP) by playing in matches. Freshmen gain 1 XP for each set they play. Sophomores gain 1 XP for every three sets they play. Juniors gain 1 XP for every five sets they play. At the end of the season, XP can be exchanged for skill levels, as though they were Coaching Points, subject to not exceeding the coaching maximums.

How do I get my team Fit?

Players cannot get injured, sent off or suspended but their fitness can change. As fitness affects each of a player’s skills it makes a big difference to how well they play.

All players start the season at 0 Fit. You can improve a player’s fitness by one level per session (to a maximum of +1) in one of two ways - not playing them in any games during a session or coaching them for Fit. If you do both in a single session, a player can be raised two levels in one go as long as they don’t exceed the maximum of +1.

A player’s fitness reduces every time he plays more than two games in a session.
