Season Expectations (Session 1)
Posted by Rob Peterson on Sunday, May. 28th, 2023 at 5:50 PM

Looking at the team roster, it looks like maybe I made a mistake somewhere last season. I don't really know where - I thought I had a pretty sound RP/CP strategy.

L - Karlsson holds down the fort in his Senior year, while Hunter McCormack looks to establish himself as the starter next season with quality potential

S - This is the position that I bungled a couple seasons ago, and we're just about to come OUT of the doldrums here. But another mediocre season at S is expected. Sophomore Teddy Bogner is going to be quite good next season. He'll never be a stand-out star, but he's going to hold down the position for another season or two while we find a hopefully all-american replacement. Freshman Chambers looks to be a good player, but the number generator didn't do his 4-star recruit justice.

OH - This is one of the areas where Antioch shines. Senior Rocha is one of only two 'A' rated players to start the season. He'll lead the attack with Junior Jasper not far behind him, skill-wise. These two will pose a solid one-two punch for all important matches. Sophomore Brownlee underwhelmed in his Freshman year pre-season and as a result, did not get much coaching during his rookie year. He will most likely see playing time ceded to Freshman Carlson, one of the 3-star recruits we took a risk on. It looks like Carlson will be a serviceable player for his career, while not being a true standout. Other Freshman Troutman was signed as insurance, but it looks like that insurance wasn't needed.

RS - This position is one that, admittedly, got away from me early on, and it's taken several seasons to right the ship here. This really solidified to me the notion of needing that 2 year gap between stars, and not letting it go further than that. Chrisian Blaser, now in his Junior year, has really put in the work over the past 2 seasons, and he's looking to attack, attack, attack. Senior Adam Curry has barely ever left the pine, and he doesn't pose to see much playing time ahead of new Freshman Salamanca, who really only has a Max Attack going for him. This is where we made our biggest mistake last season. Going for a 3-star RS probably wasn't the best of ideas. We may pay for this in a few seasons - we'll have to see.

MB - This is another position that Antioch has always done well at. Junior Alvarado is the team's other A-rated player to start the season. He's got the potential to be a 17 Serve, 17 Attack, 16 Block before too long this season. Those are great numbers. Senior Tanaka is another great player. He probably could have been better, but we couldn't afford to fully coach him early on, and so he caps out at a B+ rating. Sophomore Reid is showing GREAT promise. He played a lot last season, and was coached to the max. He will take over soon as the team's star MB. Freshman Hanrahan comes in with a good pedigree, but the number generator doesn't look to have been kind to him. We'll have to dig in a bit to analyze the recruits and the number generators.

So, overall, we're still fixing the mistakes from RS a few seasons back. It looks like some gambles in recruiting didn't pay off as well as we hoped, and a potential new mistake was made there as well. Sigh. One of these seasons, we'll figure this out.

Looks like a very good Antioch roster this season.  Is this the year they call the carpenter to build that trophy case?  I think it is.

Nope.

I wonder if Rob has a spot on his refrigerator for a reminder of the June 11th matchup with the Bananas?  ðŸ¤”

We may not be ready to win any silverware yet, but we mashed those bananas at the end of last season, and we'll do again this year.

The Rats are pleased that the schedule didn't have us playing the 'Fish early this season. Easier to pad the league win stats without traveling to the Fish Bowl.
