New Orleans and Cincinnati // Best Record Ever (Poll)
Posted by Allan Sellers on Monday, Jul. 3rd, 2023 at 10:21 PM

As you know the TMVL historical mark for best record ever was set by Mr. Steve Turner in Season 5 at 34-4.

At the midway point of our season Kevin Martin has an AMAZING 19-1 mark with New Orleans.

Cincinnati led by Mr. James Tucker are just one match behind with a superb 18-2.

Can one or both of these two teams break Steve's record?

Or will bringing attention to the exploits lead to what some (mostly Dr. James White and CB) have referred to as the "Al Sellers Kiss of Death"?

I know some of "you people" want me to vote for the Kiss of Death...  😎

😘☠️

Max Sellers on Monday, Jul. 3rd, 2023 at 10:43 PM

Both teams have a potential 20 games to go. I think Cincinnati will be close at maybe 35-4 but New Orleans will smash it.

Steve Turner on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 6:41 AM

34-4 is going to be really difficult to beat.  With 4 game sessions, and freshman needing and having to play almost impossible.  No idea how you did it Steve!  Unless losing early in the WGM was key?!

James Tucker on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 8:19 AM

I think you're correct about losing the WGM quarter finals against Schenectady. That made us 18-2 and after that we only played 3 match sessions. If we'd carried on in the WGM I imagine I would have had to throw two non-con games and finished 34-6.

The 4 games we lost were

Quincy early on 5 sets, none by more than 3 points

Schenectady 4 sets - we were unlucky

Arlington 5 sets - not bottom 7 but we had two quarter finals to win

Quincy 3 sets - bottom 7 and T7 the two semifinals.

Technically 35-5 is a worse % than 34-4 but I will consider the record broken. I will of course be rooting for the opposition :-)

Steve Turner on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 2:11 PM

Kevin's already played Baton Rouge and Nashville away.

With home advantage in the cups they could both do it.

Roy Rolsten on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 2:12 PM

We were lucky though - Columbia had an awesome squad with A rated players everywhere but possibly MB who were decent. All receivers were skill 17. And with the new teams all starting low in T7 we had an advantage in being  able to play below T7. And the mindset all coaches get in all these games  where you decide it's pointless trying to beat a top team and play stronger in other matches.

Steve Turner on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 2:15 PM

good luck to both teams as it looks a very hard record to beat especially now with the kiss of death!!

Vick Hall on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 3:08 PM

I think it'll be tough for both to break it because they can't both win the big three tournaments. There are three guaranteed losses out there, to be split somehow among New Orleans and Cincy. It's certainly not impossible for both teams to break the record, but it's more likely that only one will.

Jason Halpin on Tuesday, Jul. 4th, 2023 at 3:13 PM

Chances killed.

Craig Bucknall on Wednesday, Jul. 5th, 2023 at 10:16 AM

I voted for New Orleans, only, for the reason that Jason stated, although I hadn't read his post until after I voted. We must think alike....?

Mike Halpin on Wednesday, Jul. 5th, 2023 at 12:54 PM

Gave it my best shot vs NEW ORLEANS this week.

Phil McIntosh on Thursday, Jul. 6th, 2023 at 4:11 AM

Would love to see both teams break the record, but there's a lot of great sides out there that stand in their way. Tough 1st round Cup draw for Cinci too

Roger Mendonça on Thursday, Jul. 6th, 2023 at 9:01 AM

Is there a losing streak record I can break?

Matthew Fowler on Thursday, Jul. 6th, 2023 at 11:15 AM

Columbia had a 12 game losing  streak in season 1. No idea if this is a record.

Steve Turner on Thursday, Jul. 6th, 2023 at 11:43 AM

Pekin (then called Normal) lost 24 games in a row at the end of Season 2, and then a 25th (as Pekin) at the start of Season 3.

Roger Mendonça on Thursday, Jul. 6th, 2023 at 7:38 PM

I think the real kiss of death here is Al voting for both of them to break the record.

Rob Peterson on Sunday, Jul. 9th, 2023 at 8:42 PM

One loss for New Orleans this session leaves both teams poised at 22-2 (was a sidestep to the Shield a deliberate act of strategic genius from Kevin?)

Now another four game session coming up, including the WGM Final where something has to give.  Cinci has a particularly brutal session - if James can come through these four games unscathed then he looks unstoppable.

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Jul. 10th, 2023 at 6:26 AM

As Steve mentioned: records like 34-4 are usually an anomaly, e.g. a mature peak setup in an expansion season.
However this season, neither NO nor CCT can play all games competitively in 4 game sessions with key matches.

So it's your choice if you want to play seriously against them  - or succumb and lose to their C- freshmen.

Eduard Habermann on Tuesday, Jul. 11th, 2023 at 8:10 PM

And that's why I voted "Kiss of Death", even ahead of NO losing to the ridicolously underskilled #31 T7.

Eduard Habermann on Tuesday, Jul. 11th, 2023 at 8:14 PM

Both on 24-4 with a potential 12 games to go. They can only meet once more in the Nationals final. New Orleans have the harder schedule and if anyone plays T7 at the right time they could cause an upset but I think both will get 35 wins now.

Steve Turner on Monday, Jul. 17th, 2023 at 6:07 AM

At this stage we were 24-2 and had losses to Arlington (2-3) and Quincy (0-3) both in the Conference.

Steve Turner on Monday, Jul. 17th, 2023 at 10:22 PM

No way we finish with just 4 losses. I'll take a few trophies any day!

Kevin Martin on Monday, Jul. 17th, 2023 at 11:40 PM

Will Kevin try in his TMVL Shield game against me this week or will I solidify the kiss of death?

Max Sellers on Tuesday, Jul. 18th, 2023 at 5:27 PM

Well, looks like Kevin came to play in that Shield contest Mad Max.   😎

Most wins all-time in TMVL (30 wins or more)

Season 5 - Columbia (34-4)

Season 6 - Quincy (32-6)

Season 8 - Cincinnati (31-9)

Looks like we're adding New Orleans and a Cinci repeat to the list this season...

Allan Sellers on Sunday, Jul. 23rd, 2023 at 8:33 PM

Both teams likely to break 30 wins unless playing for XP (I haven't checked).
