TMVL - Season 4 National Championship Qualification Picture
Posted by Allan Sellers on Monday, Jan. 10th, 2022 at 12:17 PM

On January 15th we'll be running session 8 to determine which 8 teams qualify for the National Championship Bracket.  The remainder of the teams will play in the Holyoke Invitational.  Below are the "best and worst records" each team could achieve after Saturday, at the end of the session to get an idea where your team may fit.

The Top 8 for the National Championship bracket is determined in this manner:
- Conference Winners (2)
- Conference Tournament Winners (2)
- WGM Cup Winner (1)
- If a team wins more than one of the above, note that there will be no automatic bids to 2nd place team in any of the above competitions.
- 3 (or more) wild card teams with the next best overall record (overall match win pct, set win pct, points for/against pct.)

One caveat here is this:

- We give out co- (or tri-) titles for conference records.  But only the top team in each conference gets the automatic bid to the National Championship.  That is based on:

- Tiebreakers are handled in this order:
   - Matches
   - Set Pct
   - Point Pct

Team Best Record Worst Record Notes

Quincy

24-6 20-10 The Rabid Biting Mules are pretty much qualified on record.  They have a chance to win three competitions this week: Conference, Conference Tourney, and WGM Cup.

Baton Rouge

20-8 17-11 Like Quincy, Mr. Halpin's Bunch are also likely qualified on record.  They have two chances to auto-qualify with a Conference or Conference Tourney first place finish this week.

Columbia

19-8 17-10 The Fighting Crabs are also likely in.  Mr. Turner's team has had an excellent season and can still get the Eastern Conference automatic bid if they win and the Mules lose their final conference match.

Schenectady

15-11 17-9 Yes, I can spell this name.  Yes, Max and I should have chosen a city that wasn't so hard to spell. :-)

Mr. Kallin is battling it out with Baton Rouge and Burlington for the bid from the Western Conference.  However, the Squirrels are on the outside looking in as if all teams with the tiebreakers don't get them that top spot.  Still they are likely a wild card qualifer based on record.

St. Charles

17-10 14-13

Mr. Sellers could be an Eastern Conference co-champ but cannot finish in the top, auto-bid spot.

However, he can automatically qualify with a win over Q-City in the Conference Tournament Final.  If that doesn't happen they are on the bubble depending on who else gets an automatic bid.

Antioch

16-11 14-13 Mr. Peterson's Anglerfish are a bubble team and will be rooting for teams like Burlington, Normal, and Carlsbad to not win their competitions where they'd get an automatic bid.

New Orleans

16-11 14-13 The Swamp Rats, led by Mr. Martin, are in the same spot as Antioch but if tied on record would be "slightly" behind on set differential as of the session 7 results.

Sheboygan

15-11 13-13

Mr. Holden, like Mr. Turner, Mr. Peterson, and Mr. Martin (and others) have made significant contributions to the success of this league.  Thank you all!

Mr. Holden has helped with certain aspects like recruiting.  If there's something you don't like about TMVL, you can probably blame Mr. Holden.  :-)

The Vampire Bats need two wins and many things to go their way to get a wild card into the National Championship.  But it is very possible.

Carlsbad

16-13 13-16 Mr. McIntosh enjoys his Sprecher Root Beer.  The Chameleons are in the final of the WGM Cup and are the defending champs.  Win and they are in...lose and they need some help to get a wild card bid...

Burlington

14-13 12-15 Mr. Martins has the Bullfrogs in the running for the Western Conference title.   They'll likely need a Baton Rouge loss to Santa Clara to get the top spot and the automatic bid.  Anything less and they'll need to ride out the results.

Normal

14-13 11-16 Mr. Patel is the biggest surprise of this list.  The Ninjas had won 10, 2, and 11 in their first 3 seasons.  They have already won 11 with at least 9 matches to play.  The Ninjas will face the Banana Bunch in the Western Conference Tournament finale.  Qualification is simple for Mr. Patel.  Win that match and you are in the National Championship bracket.  Lose and it could be challenging to get a wild card.

San Diego

11-14 9-16 Although Mr. White's Swordfish have been eliminated from the National Championship Bracket he has them headed in the right direction.   Winners of 9 matches so far this season and a 7-6 4th place conference record is a big accomplishment.  At 9 wins their prior season winning totals were 11, 10, 12 and they have a chance to exceed and build on that this season.

Albuquerque

11-14 9-16 Ms. McIntosh's Raccoons won 10 matches last season and already have 9 wins with at least 8 to play.  The ABQ coach enjoys her trashtalking and has just posted a 3-1 win over her father.  The Raccoons finished in the quarterfinal stage of the Holyoke last season.  Let's see if they can build on that in season 4.

Teutopolis

9-16 7-18 Mr. Cabral's Twisters are in a rebuilding phase at the moment.  Will the Holyoke help them get back on track entering Season 5?

Mendon

7-18 5-20 Mr. Whittenburg's team finished in the semis of the Holyoke last season and in 2nd place in season 2. The Mushrooms are active in recruting a MB and L this session so hopefully they'll be able to add some players and continue to improve next season.

Santa Clara

6-19 4-21 Mr. Hathaway's Chihuahuas were in the National Championship bracket last season.  Their T-14 puts them in the mix with many teams so hopefully they are a player or two away from getting back to that competition.

I assume a 19-8 record beats a 19-9 record and therefore a better seeding (assuming the National tourney is seeded? Asking for a friend.

Steve Turner on Monday, Jan. 10th, 2022 at 7:13 PM

You are correct Steve.  I looked at the rules and I was missing pct behind matches won so I'll add that as its the way the code determines this.

Seeding is based on this order: matches won pct, sets won pct, points won pct.

Allan Sellers on Monday, Jan. 10th, 2022 at 9:38 PM

Certainly a big weekend of matches ahead

John Holden on Monday, Jan. 10th, 2022 at 11:04 PM

Here's how the "automatic bids" to the National Championship bracked played out this weekend:

Eastern Conference

Quincy - automatic bid based on Conference set pct over Columbia

Quincy Columbia tied at 10-4 W/L;  Quincy .649 and Columbia .647 on set pct

Both teams will get co-conference championship trophies added to the cabinet

Western Conference

Baton Rouge  - automatic bid based on Conference set pct over Burlington and Schenectady

All 3 teams will get co-conference championship trophies added to the cabinet

Eastern Conference Tourney

St. Charles - automatic bid for beating Quincy

Western Conference Tourney

Baton Rouge wins tournament over Normal.

No bid handed out

WGM Cup

Quincy wins tournament defeating Carlsbad

No bid handed out

Automatic Bids

Quincy

Baton Rouge

St. Charles

5 Bids available

These teams qualified and are seeded based on win pct, then set pct, then points pct.

1. Quincy

2. Baton Rouge

3. Columbia

4. Schenectady

5. Antioch

6. Sheboygan

7. St. Charles

8. New Orleans

New Orleans just edge the Bullfrogs on Set Pct (.505 to .490) to get the final spot.

I was a little disappointed to see us win the session 2-0, hoping Baton Rouge could only manage 2-1 and give us second seed. But then I spotted that seventh seed is St Charles and we don't do well against them (well once we did but we were lucky).

Steve Turner on Sunday, Jan. 16th, 2022 at 10:23 PM

Yes, I'm not excited about facing St. Charles, either.
