Season 4 Final Draft-Assistant Coaches/Directors/Home Court
Posted by Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Nov. 9th, 2021 at 12:42 AM

Rule Changes to Start With Season 4.

Note: This section of the rules will be used for Seasons 4 and 5.  We will evaluate during season 5 if we should keep the approach, modify it, or scrap it and come up with another approach.

Home Court Modification

·      All home court matches will now have this basic setup starting with season 4.

·      Home team impact

o   +1 ATK

o   +1 BLK

o   +1 DEF

·      The home team gets fired up and so do their fans, by big plays (attacks, blocks and key digs)

·      For Seasons 1-3 the approach was to reduce the away team (-1) for all six abilities.

Assistant Coaches

·      Each assistant coach has 1, 2, or 3 abilities they specialize in that can improve the performance of a team each session.

·      Each assistant coach is effective no more than one match per session (coaches select which one)

·      Each team has 3 assistant coaches

·      Each assistant coach is selected via a draft

·      The start of season 4 will have a catch-up draft to get all teams to 3 assistants

o   Initially to start season 4, assistant coaches will have a 1, 2, or 3 season contract depending on the round of the draft

o   Draft order is determined by overall record (using the records in the Standings -> Overall page)

o   For example, the team that finished at #16 drafts first in rounds 1-3 and the team finishing at #1 drafts last in rounds 1-3.

·      Starting with season 5, the draft would be one round.  It would follow the same rules as Round 1 below.

·      Each Assistant Coach’s effectiveness is based on their coach skill for a given ability.  They can be:

o   E (Elite) – 100% chance of adding +1 per player for a given skill (like ATK)

o   Q (Quality) – 85% chance of adding +1 per player for a skill

o   A (Average) – 70% chance of adding +1 per player for a skill

Draft for Season 4

·      Round 1 (the start of season 5 will just have this round)

o   6 assistants have 3 abilities

o   6 assistants have 2 abilities

o   6 assistants have 1 ability

o   3-season contracts

·      Round 2

o   9 assistants have 3 abilities

o   9 assistants have 2 abilities

o   2-season contracts

·      Round 3

o   9 assistants have 2 abilities

o   9 assistants have 1 ability

o   1-season contract

Example Assistant Coaches Staff (after the draft):

Albuquerque Raccoons (drafting at #1)

Assistant Name

SRV

RCV

BLK

ATK

SET

Going into Season 4 Albuquerque will be drafting first and have some good opportunities to get some quality coaches.  Midway in the draft order N'Orleans will also be able to get some good coaches, while Quincy will have to take what is left.

Additional Staff

·      Two additional staff are available on 1 season contracts.  You simply pick the one you want each season and can change it each season.

·      Which does your team need more?

o   Winning this season because you have a strong lineup -> Marketing Director

o   Doing a team rebuild and need recruiting for next season -> Recruiting Director

·      Note that there could be 1-2 other roles in the future if there are good ideas to make them equivalent to the above two in terms of team impact.

Marketing Director

·      This is the staff role that gets fans in seats.

·      This role is effective for home matches only

·      Some matches it works and some it does not.

·      Away team impact

o   -1 for SRV (80% chance of effectiveness)

o   -1 for RCV (60% chance of effectiveness)

o   -1 for SET (40% chance of effectiveness)

Recruiting Director

·      This staff member has one simple role:

o   Improve the roster for next season

·      Each recruiting director gets their team 40-60 RP per session.   Maybe he/she is effective some weeks.  Maybe in others they are out partying and not doing their job?

Impact/Goal of these additions

·      Reduce the current. massive impact of home court advantage while continuing to maintain some level of advantage.

·      Provide teams some help to level the playing field.  For example:

o   Some managers may have focused more on FIT +2 in seasons 1 and 2 and not as much in season 3.

o   Others have taken on teams that they didn’t start with that may have had some NMRs and not always 100% CP use each section

·      Give teams the ability to apply strategy for which matches they want to utilize their assistant coaches.

·      Give teams the option to use the Marketing vs. Recruiting Director option (essentially try to win now or focus more on the future).

·      Using a random element in certain situations.  For example:

o   For assistant coaches (unless the coach is E-Elite at an ability) they may not always be effective in getting the players to respond and improve in practice that week.

o   The Marketing Director may not be able to get as many fans in seats for each home game that they want to, hence the probability levels for the skills a better than average home crowd can influence.

·      There’s no change to what teams get for winning:

o   There will still be the same RP bonuses for top finishes in each conference and tournament competition

o   The more sets you win, the more CP you get to spend.

o   Thus, ideally, there’s some benefit to the away team and also the teams that need to grow a bit, but these updates should not be an incentive to tank (aka lose matches to finish with the worst record).  If they are we will see about addressing that issue.

I'm in with this plan. As a bonus, anything that puts Ian Lindsay as an in-game match assistant for Al is going to be awesome. "Well, we would have won if Ian had come through for us."  "Yet again, we had to explain to Ian that bringing the Libero forward to run an offside trap is not helpful in this sport."

Can you use more than one coach per match?

Steve Turner on Tuesday, Nov. 9th, 2021 at 10:40 AM

Thanks Kevin!  :-)

Steve: I will need to add that but only one assistant per match.

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Nov. 9th, 2021 at 1:14 PM

I like it. Can't wait to try it out!

Mike Halpin on Tuesday, Nov. 9th, 2021 at 3:05 PM

I have further questions.

Taking Phil Dawson at Albuquerque as an example: in the initial proposal it sounded to like Micki would know he had RCV, BLK and DEF abilities but each game it was random which was 100% and which were 90% and 70%. Now it looks fixed.

Is it

A. Random each game

B. You know which abilities he has when you draft but you don't know which are E, Q and A and these are assigned when you get the assistant coach (similar to maxSL in Sanc).

C. You know these before you draft.

I'm ok with any of them.

And it looks like Christian Mahomes is elite at all three abilities. Is this possible or just typing quickly?

Steve Turner on Tuesday, Nov. 9th, 2021 at 3:17 PM

Steve: Yes I did adjust from the initial proposal to the final draft here.

The idea is that certain coaches are skilled in different abilities (which I've seen over the years watching Max and the coaching he's received in clinics).

The concept is then that its rare that you will have assistants at an elite level across multiple abilities (usually there is a drop off and/or they will say "go work with with that other coach over there, he's the serving expert" for example).

So with all that in mind, when only one ability is available, that's an automatic E.

When there are two skills, it will be either an E-E (rare-ish) or E-Q (very common) and maybe a rare E-A combo

With three skills E-E-E will be rare (likely just one), minor amount of E-E-Q (again maybe one), at least a couple E-Q-Q, and mostly E-Q-A.

Those rough counts aren't final so I'm open to a proposal there on combos and counts based on the info at the beginning of the post.

Then the E (100% effective), Q (85% effective), and A (70% effective) will be used. (feel free to make a case on a diff percentage)

But yes, each assistant coach skill (EQA) is tied to a specific skill/ability.  So an E at ATK is always (100%) effective at getting that +1 for ATK players on the team in that match of the session.

I think the answer then is C if I followed your post clearly.

I like it   dont understand it 100% but I am in!

Aires Martins Jr on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 2021 at 5:41 AM

Thanks, Al. Yes C. And i like the original 16 choices becoming 18.

I can see some coaches having interesting decisions. We are weak at MB so I might have the choice between E BLK single ability or E RCV A BLK where I'm ok at RCV.

As for percentages on Q and A I think 98% and 97%  with all the 95% fails I keep getting in United ;-)

Steve Turner on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 2021 at 10:31 AM

Once you remove the clear and good home court rule change, I'm not sure I understand these rules at all.

John Holden on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 2021 at 1:35 PM

I'll do my best to continue to explain and answer any questions so please ask.  I'm currently spending evenings updating the end of season code to automate the process of awarding RP based on competition finish so we don't have to deal with a manual step.

Yes, Steve, I think there may be some element of what you describe.  It is hard to know for certain until we give it a try...and yes, assume the normal service from Olmec on how 5% chance of something happening, in reality can be much higher for certain managers...  :-)

Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 2021 at 6:37 PM

John: Home court was too strong I think.

So now rather than away getting -1 on all 6, home now gets +1 on ATT, BLK and DEF

Then you have a choice of Directors, one gives you 40-60 extra RP every week, the other takes -1 off the away team's SRV, RCV and SET but not 100% of the time, So the latter is a slightly toned down version of the current rule.

If I've done it correctly all teams will play one home and one away each session except the third and fourth sessions where we have 2 conference games and a non conference, later sessions when we have the seeded WM Cup and Coference tournaments, and the last two sessions where we have one non conference game.

Then the coaching assistants. we all get three and they last three seasons once we get going (similar to BRBs that last two seasons). For next season we have 1 that will retire at the end of season 4, one that will retire at the end of season 5 and one that reitires at the end of season 6. From season 5 onwards we get a replacement meaning we always have three.

The replecements will be split into 3 groups, 6 with three abillities, 6 with two and 6 with just one ability. There will be a draft to decide who gets who each season.

All coaches will be Elite in at least one ability (meaning the team gets +1 for all players on his speciality 100% of the time). Those with 2 or 3 abilities could be either E, Q or A on their abilities.

You can only use one coach per game and a coach can only be used once per session. First session is four games so one game will not have a coach. Later on, especially if out of the cup competitions, some only get two games in a session so one coach won't be used.

Steve Turner on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 2021 at 8:28 PM

As noted in recent emails, we will hold off on the assistant coaches/directors for at least 1 more season.  Hoping to get Max's help with coding that and interested in seeing if we can get to a good spot on home court advantage in season 4.  Thanks to everyone for the ideas and feedback.  I think the assistants/directors WILL add some good strategic elements when added, just need to phase them in at the right time.

Great adds!
