Volleyball Rules and General Info
Posted by Allan Sellers on Saturday, Feb. 26th, 2022 at 12:29 AM

OVERVIEW VIDEO

Here's a good overview link on how volleyball works.  You'll learn more in time, but this is a start.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLZ44KBWEbo

A couple notes on where the video conflicts (or need clarification) with our setup

1) We play best of 5 sets.  Sets 1-4 go to 25 (must win by 2), and the 5th set (if needed) goes to 15.  You'll lost 13-15 in the 5th set and it will be painful.

2) We just use 1 setter per team per match (for now)

3) In our game the Libero swaps with the front row MB when the Libero would rotate to the front row.  The Libero can only play back row (more on the libero later).

WATCHING MATCHES

The overview will hopefully give you a foundation.  There will be more posts (one for each position) shortly.  In the meantime, watching real volleyball will help you get an idea of some of the terms (by listening to the announcers) and seeing what certain positions do.  You don't need to watch full matches, but try to watch a few points or one set to see how it goes.

2021 Women's College Championship

In particular, please watch the last 5-10 minutes of the women's match to see some amazing plays.

QUESTIONS

Did you see something you are curious about learning more on or just have general questions?  Feel free to comment on this thread and we will help.

It's definitely worth watching that first video if you know little about volleyball and especially the bit about rotation in conjunction with the tutorials.

So far I've watched the first set of the match of the men's 2021 championship. They don't half hit the ball fast!

And it was a little hard sometimes to work out who'd won some of the points as even when a player messed up there was still lots of high fiveing and back slapping.

When I've played 5-a-side football even if you score a goal you'd look a bit odd celebrating

That's a great observation Roy.  And it is somewhat strategic.  If you make a poor pass on serve receive, for example, and all players do, the other coach looks to see body language.  The huddle is there after each point (high fiving/back slapping) to get everyone to a "reset" level and forget about the last point and get ready for the next one.

If the other coach sees a player who has bad body language/attitude after making a poor pass off a serve, GUESS WHERE he will tell his player to serve to next?

So the huddle element is to get all players back to "neutral" and ready to go again.

The alternative is to let a player who has made a bad play go sulk in the corner of the court and stew over a bad play which will then probably impact the next couple of points.

This is a MASSIVE MOMENTUM type sport where teams can go on long runs with multiple points just by getting the other team negative.
