Coaches Poll Payback
Posted by Allan Sellers on Wednesday, Aug. 16th, 2023 at 11:15 PM

In the cellphone age there are daily reminders of why we should feel like victims and that we're mistreated.

Let's take that a step further and focus on how our colleagues are voting for us (or not) in the Coaches Poll.  After the poll closes this info will appear (maybe sooner but I don't think I coded it that way).

One of the original suggestions (maybe 3-4 years ago; I can't remember) was to show how people voted.  Well, now we are.

Once National Champion Max sees this he will be "keeping score" for next season...

My hope is that people will complain about how certain coaches voted for you (or did not).

I mean what did Rob do to get that 2nd place vote from Phil?

Enjoy!

Drat! Will now have to take more care when I vote.

As much as giving someone credit for giving them the no 1 spot is worth and rightly so,  can it be considered taunting or shaming to actively place someone in 10th place ???

Interested to hear Al's take on this most of all . . lol

James White on Thursday, Aug. 17th, 2023 at 6:53 PM

After the poll closed I could never remember how I'd voted, so great that I'll be able to review how out of touch I am with the general mood. Or in this case, how I somehow missed voting for the Pandas. Sorry Roy 😳

Roger Mendonça on Thursday, Aug. 17th, 2023 at 7:23 PM

I love this. It's going to be a good reminder for me to vote more often. And I'll keep Phil on my Christmas card list.

Rob Peterson on Thursday, Aug. 17th, 2023 at 8:34 PM

Thank you for the 3 people that voted for me

Matthew Fowler on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 4:48 AM

I really didn't expect this to be an issue, and I don't intend to make it an issue now. But here's my rationale. I really want to vote for my own team when my team is doing well. I'm not allowed to do that under current parameters. It really IS NOT an issue I care to die for. It is not a big deal. But, when it comes time to vote, in those rare instances where I believe my team deserves my vote. I cast ballots for lesser teams. It's not intended to be offensive or a slight to anyone. I just feel like by doing this I'm voting for my team. I will say through all of that I do try to cast a top ballot for "the best" team. If I had known it was really an issue for anyone I probably would have been better off just not voting.

Phil McIntosh on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 4:40 PM

James, it's like when someone's will specifies that a despised relative is to receive $1. You want there to be no uncertainty that you don't think much of them.

Jason Halpin on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 6:49 PM

Seems no better or worse than the systems other coaches have said they use Phil. As yours places Pekin higher than anyone else did, I say carry on 👍🏼

Roger Mendonça on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 6:54 PM

I sometimes forget to vote. One reason is it takes time to go through all the games - I look at the W-L for the week but also NET gains or losses. Usually the first 2 or 3 are easy but then I struggle and end up pretty much guessing. Top 10 is hard to do sometimes.

Steve Turner on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 10:39 PM

Pekin's vote was legit. I didn't think we could beat Pekin in the tourney. Also, New Orleans was going to get a top vote from me until we beat them in the tourney. I mean, if you can't beat Carlsbad....meh.

Phil McIntosh on Friday, Aug. 18th, 2023 at 11:36 PM

I had some feedback on the challenge of selecting 10 teams so I wanted to check back on that and see if others had any issues with coming up with 10 teams each week.

In the current poll you select a top 10, the code then takes that and at the end of voting adds it all up for a Top 10 list for a given session with a listing of the "others receiving votes".  Our format is very familiar to me...

------------

Example of Illinois High School Football:

------------

Do you all have any issues around selecting 10 teams?  Does it take too long?  Is it hard to figure out? etc  I wanted to share my approach (which is not the norm of what you should do...just an example).

For me I often pull this up first:

Then this up:

And then tournament pools brackets (sometimes first actually) if we're at that time of the season.

I grab some teams from each.  Standings tells me who is hot.  AND YOU KNOW STEVE TURNER IS HOT!  Check out that Recent Form.  Conferences tell me who is performing.  Tournaments Pools/brackets tell me who's deep in a tournament.

I timed myself and it took me about 2 minutes.   But I'm really into all this so I know I'm different.  I really wanted to put my friend Dr. White at #10 which is my norm, but felt like Baton Rouge was more deserving this week (as I was looking at Conference leaders near the end)...

Another suggestion I received was to "blank out" the default entry in the list so that no one accidentally (sorry Kelsey) selects ABQ.  Though with Kelsey at 3-3 and Mad Max at 1-5 I'd have to select the ABQ higher than St. Chucks (perhaps next week).

Please provide feedback so I can take it all into account for any updates. Thank you!

I just use overall standings and use that plus how teams have played recently.  Sometimes that means lower ranking teams make my top 10. When I get around to doing it that is

Matthew Fowler on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 3:44 AM

I tend to use the biggest ELO scorers that week, takes a couple of minutes.

Roger Mendonça on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 6:48 AM

Picking just a top 5 coaches each week may suit a lazy manager like me who struggles to select 10 each week.

I like to see who never votes for me though,

so I can hold a grudge :-)

Mark Creasey on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 11:28 AM

I really find it difficult to chose more than 5 teams voting for.

So I'd prefer 5 votes; not only but also for my laziness,

Eduard Habermann on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 4:30 PM

I'm another  one for 5 votes. Not so much lazy but I find it difficult to pick between a lot of teams with similar records

Steve Turner on Monday, Sep. 18th, 2023 at 5:13 PM

My method is overall standings to see who won how many games  in that session and then use NET rankings as a tie breaker.

When it gets to later sessions when teams are playing different amount of games the above gets more difficult.  Would a session break indicator be possible in the overall standings form guide?  Probably just for me ;-)

That takes about 5 minutes. I think 10 votes is fine as it means lots of teams get a vote or two.

James Tucker on Tuesday, Sep. 19th, 2023 at 8:29 AM

Thank you all for the feedback!  I appreciate it.  Speaking of lazy, I can be like that at times too.  😎

Since dropping to 5 means that I have to unwind some things (aka need to spend hours) and I've got a long list of things I want to add I probably will not change this in the near future, but I'll consider it in the future.

One question is...

Since we're locked in on Sunday deadlines should I make this a Tuesday OR Wednesday voting deadline?

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Oct. 3rd, 2023 at 11:20 PM

Being selfish a Wedesday deadline would suit me , usually don't boot up till Tuesday night so a couple of time's I've been just too late

James White on Wednesday, Oct. 4th, 2023 at 5:27 PM

I have been tardy in my voting this season, but will try and do better. I like giving the full ten votes so a few unfortunates can get added for a half decent session!
