Rolls (Session 1)
Posted by Matthew Fowler on Wednesday, Dec. 13th, 2023 at 8:16 PM

Lots of talk about rolls on recruits, no idea exactly what that means and whether mine did well or not.

I like bread rolls especially when they involve hot dogs.

Matt, the "rolls" are how new recruits get their initial skill levels in each skill (serve, receive, attack, etc.). Page 14 of the rules document has a chart that lists the possible skill levels a recruit of a particular star level could get. There is generally a 2-3 skill level range for each skill. For example, a five-star OH recruit will begin as a freshman as either a 10 or 11 in all skills except set. For each skill, the software randomly determines whether this OH will be a 10 or 11. This is the dice roll. All 11s would be a perfect roll, all 10s would be the worst possible roll, and a mix of 10s and 11s will fall somewhere on the spectrum in between, depending on which skill gets which number. If the OH got 11s in ATK and RCV, but 10s in everything else, that wouldn't be perfect, but it wouldn't be too shabby because ATK and RCV are the most important OH skills.

You can compare your new recruits to the chart in the rules to see whether your recruits have skills at the top or bottom of the ranges for their star level.

Also note that some recruits are listed as MAX, MAX+1, or MAX+2 for a particular skill in recruiting. This means they are guaranteed to start as a freshman at the highest possible skill level for five-star recruits (or one or two skill levels above that) for the listed skill, per the chart in the rules.

I am not sure Matt wants to look those up!   I make it 10 minimums over his 4 recruits.  The 1 star picked up 3, and the 3 star walk on picked up 2 in the two key categories for an MB.

The big OH 5* managed 3 out of 4 possible minimums (excluding SET, and the Max +2 SRV)

Hard luck Matt.
