What went wrong. (Session 5)
Posted by Steve Turner on Sunday, May. 1st, 2022 at 11:52 AM

Mark asked after his game against St Charles.

First up I think your order of play was spot on and nothing you could have done better. The Scarecrows were better over all anyway.

However your Libero should have served for MB Hicks. Not only is he a better server but if the ball is returned then he's a better defender.

It's only when Hicks serves that you get this advantage. All you want Hicks doing is attacking and blocking and both these happen when he is at the net.

Hicks served 10 times and although all were served in Merritt only scored 1 point on his serve. Ironically that was due to one of his 2 digs

I need to find out what Steve is talking about. Is there a translator?

Colin, read Volleyball Rules and General Info in the Forum. It's about the 16th one down. Look at the first video which explains how players rotate and the libero coming on for the middle blocker.

In TMVL your Libero is always on the court when it's their Serve. He will replace the middle blocker that is in the back row.

He will also be on the court on your Serve whenever it's the setter, right side or outside hitter serving - again ereplacing the middle blocker in the back row

When it's a middle blocker's turn to Serve he could be substituted for your libero if you have ordered it. However it's for only one of your two middle blockers.

When you Serve there's a good chance of it being returned and not blocked. In this circumstance it's one of your 3 backrow players that get a chance to defend (dig) and keep the rally going. You normally want your libero on the court to do this but if the middle blocker served then the libero isn't playing.

Mark had a middle blocker with a worse SRV  and DEF skills than his libero.and not ordered the substitution (or like I've done picked a MB that wasn't playing).
