Back to winning ways (Session 11)
Posted by Steve Turner on Tuesday, Aug. 1st, 2023 at 5:50 PM

It seems ages since we had a winning session so it was a nice feeling. It helped that Arlington brought their reserves to our T7.

The Quincy game was a little fortunate as we were 5 points a man weaker and I must have made a mistake with my Libero serving for Middle Blocker as he didn't. A SRV 10, DEF 5 MB was not idea especially as I had him in the number one spot. Good to have a win as the weaker team though.

Another 2-0 session though I wished the Squirrels had put up more of a fight. I was hoping for 4 sets but now my freshman middle blocker needs to play again this week. I knew by young setter had to play.

We have two tough games with Pekin and Baton Rouge. I've looked at their squads and expect T7 from both.

We aren't far behind and can win both with some good luck but finishing the season at 500 looks unlikely.

Well I certainly called that right. A sad end to a sad season for the Tomatoes. Recruiting went well so hopefully another good one next season will see us getting back to our ripe old.selves.

Sometimes you have some bad luck as a coach.

And sometimes your team is just somehow in a lot of matches where the other team ALSO wants to win...even more!

In the final session...

Steve lost to Pekin (Tomatoes 87/A- and Peas 92 A)

Steve lost to Baton Rouge (Bananas 91/A and Columbia 83 B+)

That was the season for Columbia.  Great lineups but the other team almost always ALSO came to play.

The Tomatoes won 14.  They could just as easily have won 24.

With two 5-star recruits (and a max ATK on the 4-star OH) people are already predicting a BIG-8 title for Columbia next season.

And for good reason.  Don't fall asleep on this formidable OH lineup:

Because I'm having nightmares...
