Anatomy of a loss (Session 3)
Posted by Steve Turner on Sunday, Apr. 17th, 2022 at 8:59 AM

I thought I'd take a closer look at why we lost our game against Quincy. It wasn't a bad loss by any means, just disappointing. I certainly don't think I did anything wrong with my lineup and I've played enough of these types of games to accept that you lose games you "deserve" to win.

First did we deserve to win? As an overall grade we were 84 to 82 better (or 2 A+ to 2 A rated better), which all came from our 93 to 78 RS advantage. Unfortunately Torres only had 9 attacks for 5 kills whereas Garner, their RS, had 20 for 10 kills. Torres possibly didn't get picked out as best attacker when a choice (both rated the same and maybe the software picks the OH) between him and Smalls so maybe that advantage didn't help.

Overall our blockers were better - 9 skill points total but we only got 8 block attempts to their 31 (I actualy think it's less than this as I've quickly scrolled through the report and get no where near 31, so 2 and 3 player blocks are counting more here). Out attackers were 5 points better and we got 81 kills to 64 but we also errored 24 times to their 13. I think a succesful block count as an error against the attacker.

Serving wasn't great with 809 to 878. Torres and Robinson with 17 and 15 SRV skill resectively only scored 773 and 760. Having said that we managed to pick out their worst receivers better with their 15, 16 and 17 RCV players getting 38, 36 and 19 receives respectively. On the other hand our 15, 16 and 16 RCV players got 24, 37 and 40 receptions. But that doesn't say how good/bad the serve was which affects the pass rating.

We did well on Digs with 28 to 16, so what happened?

Smalls did. His 1.77 RT (receive average rating) is very poor for a 16 skill RCV player. With 16 pass 3 attempts, 6 pass 0 (RE) it works out as 5 pass 2 and 13 pass 1 to avarage at 1.77 from 40 attempts. 13 pass 1 means 13 times there's three blockers.

So one of those games where the luck didn't go our way as much as Quincy's.

The Rabid Biting Mules will take all the luck we can get. We were lucky to win this match...
