League Title Chances
Posted by Vick Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 30th, 2020 at 12:59 PM

There are some really good teams in the top flight this year and any of them are capable of lifting the title this season. But which of them has the best chance of doing it? Here is my humble prediction!

1st: Ilkeston     Ilkeston managed third place in the leage last year and will be aiming to ramp up the challenge this year to end up top of the pile. There is every reason to believe that this is their year too. A well balanced squad with a T11 of 11.73 is bettered currently only by Bedford. Unlike bedfrd though they still have the cash to splash out on one more top class player. Probably another Fw to slot in beside Cole and Duckworth. The only conumdrum they might face is getting young app sweeper Jamie Newton enough game time.

2nd: Bedford   They have the best T11 in the division and I really fancy their chances of having a great year in the top flight. Snapping up top midfielder Charlie Cole in auction 1 was a smart piece of work for only 1002K. Oguz Baluk the ageing Fw may have been a bit overpriced, but he has added to Bedford's firepower and Manager Compton will be hoping his Captain will bring in the coveted silverware this year. Bedford may well just nick it. The side is well balanced and have a strong defence. With an aging keeper and sweeper combo this could be a now or never moment for the now cash strapped club.

3rd: York    Last years Champions heralded in the new Golden Age with their win and with a T11 of 11.64 acould well defend their title this year and become back to back champions. They still have a very decent warchest to spend and the squad is strong all round. The one thing that will make it hard for them to win the title again is bringing through app leeper Scmitz to replace the ageing Peter White. Hence I think third place is probably the best they will get this year.

4th Shepshed  Most likely threat of a resurgent Unholy Trinity comes from Shepshed with a truly formidable attack and a T11 that matches York. The defence could however be a bit porous and with little cash left Manager Atie will have to look to pick up a bargain buy somewhere as he looks for a decent new centreback.

5th AFC Wimbledon   Another member of the Unholy Trinity that can never be written off and with a T11 of 11.73 will be hoping to be winning another title. their chances would be higher if they were not trying to bring through a schoolboy keeper aswell as a sweeper. Youth coaches Caroll and Romero will have their work cut out for them this year! Wimbledon are otherwise a very balanced looking side. Top striker Mateo Shmitt is suspened for 2 games, so it will be interesting to see if Manager Dohm rests him for the session so he is fully fir for the start of the league campaign.

6th Kendal   Bringing up the evil empires rear is Kendal who only have a T11 of 11.18. Like Shepshed they have a big forward line fronted by the talented Maniche Mendes. The defence however looks very shaky and totally reliant on young Aguilar. Sweeper Harold Hardy and Keeper Jake Ruby  will have to put in some top performances until Manager Lindsay dips into his warchest to sort out his defensive vulnerabilities.

7th Boston  Boston will be bringing through an app keeper this year, but still have a good enough side to avoid relegation insspite of this. They are probably short of another decent striker to work alongside Leo MacLeod. A reasonable T11 and money to spend to keep above the relegation dogfight.

8th Halifax  The newly promoted Halifax are a noted yoyo club and look like they will struggle to stay in the top flight and follow their usual pattern of dropping straight back down again. Much will be expected of Captain Doyle and defender Kelly to protect an ageing keeper and sweeper. With some cash to spend to bolster the squad there is at least a little hope.

9th Droylsden   Their top flight stay could coome to an end this season, but Manager Gittens does seem to have the knack of keeping under par teams afloat, so maybe he can rescue them once again! with a T11 of 11 it will be hard especially with only one quality defender in Brandon Fox. Up front the forwards look good, so they should be able to net a few goals to perhaps stave off any relegation worries.

10th Chippenham The chippers look set for life in the second tier unless new Manager Enos pulls some surprises out of the bag. They do have a decent warchest, but with a T11 of just 10.4 it is a big ask to keep Chippenham in the top flight. A rebuilding year looks set to beckon with a big youth squad. Simon Ross looks set to lead the attack alongside the hotheaded Christian Giordano.

Great analysis, thanks, Vick! If you are inclined, would love to see the other divisions in your crystal ball.

Love the writeup Vick!  Evil Empire at 4, 5, and 6. Good call out with Olmec favorite Steve Turner at #1.  Bedford and York City are very tough.

Interesting to see how it all plays out.  Already noting that veteran Dave Gittins has Droylsden tied for first after 2 matches.

Veteran! Battle-weary, for sure. We have previous for peaking early and then plunging ourselves into a relegation dogfight. Expecting similar this season.

I think our challenge is over after our youth cup exit.

Steve Turner on Sunday, Feb. 7th, 2021 at 8:10 PM

Well we tipped Ilkeston for the title and it looks like they will indeed lift it unless Shepshed can pinch it at the end. Ilkeston and Shepshed are fittingly playing each other in the last game of the season and that game may well decide the outcome! Before then bth teams have tough fixtures against Droylsden and Bedford who both need wins to stay in the division. Droylsden have the better goal difference and the defensive signings of both Tadeo Tanaka and Craig Burns are heavily responsible for that. Bedford were my outside bet to lift the title, but have really struggled this year, Surely too good to go down though. The third relegation spot is likely to fall to my own team Halifax. Boston and Chippenham both had bad seasons and are already down. Bringing through the app keeper was tough for Boston and Chippenham just faced too many other better sides at this level.

So tune in to that game between Shepshed and Ilkeston. It looks like a mouth watering encounter.

Good call, Vick. I had to sacrifice Youth development a little with SBYs at 1,0,0 and 0 QNL after the Cup exit but it was worth it to win the league again.
