Premier Title Race
Posted by Vick Hall on Saturday, Jan. 8th, 2022 at 1:42 PM

Looking at the strength of the teams in this years Premier title race I was actually shocked at the quality in these sides. Each team has a formidable T11 with very few weaknesses.  On top of this some teams still have huge cash mountains to bring in a few quality extra players so whoever does win the league this year will have to use every ounce of their managerial acumen to do it because there really are no easy games here! The champion will be WORTHY! So here is my humble analysis of who will be the cream of this years crop.

1) BURTON: Are one of two teams with a T11 above 12 in the top flight and what an exceptional T11 it is. Brisset and Martins are a heavenly Gk/Sw combo and not much is going to get past them especially when they are both fully trained up. The Defence is capable as are the Midfield and a scary young attack led by the more experienced Eriksson. Burton also have a cash mountain to bring in some quality reinforcements. Manager White is known for his scrooge like qualities, but this is maybe the season a splurge could blow the other sides out of the way. The only thing that might destable the side is bringing through apprentice sweeper Valverde.

2) AFC WIMBLEDON: A top T11 of 12.36 ensures that Wimbledon will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. It will be a disappointment to outlaw Dave if the title slips from his grasp this year, but the loss away to York in the FA Cup shows they can be beaten and will serve as a wake up call to Manager Dohm that despite having the best T11 in the division they will have to play every trick in their little black book to come out top. The attack is very formidable. I might have been tempted to assign the Captaincy to Gabrielle Barone rather than Roberts in midfield but I note that Kendal have chosen this tactic too so I will keep and eye on how this pans out. It does mean Wimbledon can play a two man midfield without maybe falling foul of a top heavy attack. Poulsen will need to stay fit as Silas Cadete is not of the standard needed of a reserve keeper in this division.

3) SHEPSHED: The attack led by Catain Maldonado is ferocious and will strike fear into the hearts of many sides. It is at the back that Shepshed might struggle. A partner for Archie Brakspear is needed in defence, but top priority for Shepshed is to find a quality sweeper as soon as possible. Without a sweeper Shepshed could easily swing from title contenders to relagation fodder in this tight league. The cash is there to be spent but a sweeper has yet to appear in the first three auctions of the season so far.

4) BOSTON: Have a very well balanced side and have a good shot at taking the title this year. Possible could do with one my striker to match the firepower of some of the other teams in this division. Not much cash left to acquire one, but the squad have plenty of depth elsewhere in midfield and defence and leave them as strong contenders.

5) YORK: Have already put AFC Wimbledon to the sword in the FA Cup this season and can not be discounted in this year's title race. There is a danger they might get overrun in midfield which is a weak area for them and they may also need to bolster the attack. The ageing Rob Lampard is already injured and more injuries up front would be a big worry. Manager Tucker though does have the cash to strengthen these areas, but the pressure will be on from the start this season and no team can afford to stutter in this division.

6) WORKSOP: Have the lowest T11 in the division at 11.45 but woe betide anyone who thinks this team will be cannon fodder this year. The midfield does need bolstering with young Valentino Sanchez the only player of quality in this position. The attack is young and agile and could surprise a few teams this year whilst Maggioni and Cockham are another star GK/Sw combo that will be hard to beat. These two will ensure Worksop avoid any worries of relegation  and should comfortably establish Worksop as a top flight team for the next few years.

7) KENDAL: Have a decent T11 score of 11.73, but this season could well be a last hurrah for them as there are a lot of ageing players in this squad They need to get off to a good start and off the blocks quickly to generate CP's to train up the five Age 1 players on their books. A good first session indicates they can and they do have some cash perhaps for another striker or reserve sweeper to cover for Kjeldbjerg. They should have enough left in their ageing tank to avoid relegation, but a slow start could well scupper their season.

8) FCUM: Have a decent T11, but the squad depth is thin and for this reason they may well struggle when the going gets tough. Another Fw is certainly needed for them to hold their own in this division and a quality partner for in defence would not go amiss either. Luckily Kevin Martin has the cash to buy his way out of these troubles. As mentioned already there is very little separating the sides in this division. A couple of good cup runs will help them boost morale and give them the spirit to get out of the relegation zone.

9) BEDFORD: I feel reluctant putting Bedford this low in the table as they aleady have a 100% win record from the first three games of this season and they do have some awesome firepower up front. Defensively though they are potentially beatable and the midfield does not have much experience relying on youngsters Johnstone and Barnes. A bit more strength in depth for the squad would be useful and the cash is there to provide it. so do not write Bedford off this season.

10) LUTON: With a T11 of 11.73 it would not surprise me if Luton defy my bottom placed prediction. MacDonald is a quality keeper and the squad has some decent depth in it. Fortunately really as the piggy bank is not bulging. The main worry is the attack where Campbell is already crocked and will take a while to recover full fitness. Nathan Marshall the physio will need to apply his magic finger touch. A shaky start for them would be a worry.

Vick flatters me with the prediction analysis. I think we'll more likely be fighting off relegation. But we're going to give it all we got!

Your right to write us off great analysis

Is it not in the rules that Alon cant go more two years without a title win ?

I'm really surprised only 50% of managers voted for Wimbledon.

You were doing fine until I voiced support for you.

Well my predictions as you might have suspected were not entirely accurate for last season. I did predict the three relegated teams although not in the right order and AFC Wimbledon clinched their predicted runners up spot. Otherwise I was a bit out. Shepshed won the title last year, although they were pushed hard by an overperforming York side who settled in a very respectable third in the end. Kendal also did well last year whilst title favorites Boston  came in at th place in the end. Maybe this season will be their year.  Season 31 predictions to follow....
