XP planning
Posted by Steve Turner on Monday, Aug. 28th, 2023 at 4:31 PM

I don't know if this is any use to anyone but this is something I do to try and make sure I don't mess up CP use and XP gains.

The picture above should hopefully show my two Liberos. The numbers above are the minimum number of matches we play each session - 31. If you make it to all three knockout finals you'll play 40 matches. When I work these out I only assume each match will be a 3 setter. 31 matches means 93 sets. Last season we played 32 for 111 sets.

So I started with my Freshman, McCracken. If I decide to CP each skill twice I'll need 48 XP - 16 matches to fully coach, which is 4 sessions of 2 matches and 8 of 3.

This leaves 15 matches for Quay. P45 sets will only give me 15 XP as he's a Sophomore - enough for 1 skill so I can plan my CP around that.

So there's alternatives

1. I could decide to ignore XP for SET which means 39 sets for McCracken so 54 for Quay - but that is still only 18 XP for Quay - just one skill.

2. The row below Quay assumes I play an extra 12 sets over the season - with and without SET for McCracken. But to get these I need 34 or 35 matches or plenty of 4/5 set games at the right time.

And even if I did get 66 sets for Quay that's only 22 XP which means at best the 2nd DEF and the 1st SET. So it's likely that Quay will only get 1 skill upgraded by XP.

And that's what I'll use for CP planning. And that all this depends on who gets CP and what I can afford. Sophomores are the most expensive to CP because you can't get more than 1 XP'd and Freshmen aren't much cheaper.

That's really helpful Steve - thanks for once again sharing you knowledge so generously.  It's my ambition to one day understand the game enough (or at all) to have something I can share back!

Last season I did manage to XP all three of my sophomores twice but that was unusual both in that I reached two finals and that all three were part of my T7.  I'm not expecting the same this season!

Thank you, Roger.

I noticed an error in my first statement about McCracken 4 of 2 and 8 of 3 should be 4 sessions playing 2 matches and 8 playing 1 match.

While the math seems complicated, I suggest setting up a small spreadsheet for the XP/CP management.

This was one of the 1st things I did after taking over SB, and it did help pretty much; enough to get 4 sophomores twice XPed, to ridiculous SLs, though.

I've always thought the game should give bonus XPs if you win a game in fewer than 5 sets.

A 3-0 win: winning team gets XPs worth 5 sets, losing team gets XPs worth 3 sets

A 3-1 win: winning team gets XPs worth 5 sets, losing team gets XPs worth 4 sets

A 3-2 winning team gets XPs worth 5 sets, losing team gets XPs worth 5 sets

Is this how it works?

John Holden on Tuesday, Aug. 29th, 2023 at 1:44 PM

Not counting MB's DEF it will take one player to play 7 sets per session to be XPd twice and another two around 6 sets per session. The problems are the MB is my 3rd string so I need to get through the knockouts, the L I mention above where I need to concentrate on the Freshman but the RS is possible (7 sets per session).

While John's idea sounds grand in principle, I think it would end up with "the rich getting richer" ... Anyone playing the Bananas or the Swamp Rats or the Mules or the Tomatoes will end up seeing themselves with 3 sets worth of XP while they get 5 sets worth.

Why do we still get lumped in with the big teams? Our record last season was poor - same as Antioch I believe.

Feel free to join me in the career underachievers club Steve.

I usually eye ball XPs and try to max out my Fr and So XPs. It usually works with a fairly high level of confidence, but doesn't always. I'm going to give a spreadsheet a shot and see if that helps plan things out a bit more. I also tend to feel that I try to "max everything" in regards to CP/XP and coachable stats. That usually ends up with me playing lower classmen more frequently than I think other "top" managers do.

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Sep. 9th, 2023 at 2:35 PM

Okay. I have my spreadsheet built. Handles both CP and XP. We'll see how this goes!

Rob Peterson on Saturday, Sep. 9th, 2023 at 10:16 PM

Thanks, Steve.

I might read it after a couple of beers

Just an update:

Quay is now at 22 CP needed and 29 sets for XP. 29 is easy with 5 sessions of 2 games

McCracken is 54 CP and 3 sets for XP, also easy as we have a 3 game session next.

Steve Turner on Monday, Oct. 23rd, 2023 at 6:14 PM

I understood none of this.
