Coaching Idea
Posted by Mike Cabral on Sunday, Sep. 20th, 2020 at 4:39 PM

Borrowing an idea from United, I like the idea of needing to get players into a game to coach them. In-game experience is very valuable to developing freshmen and sophomores. I also like the idea of still being able to coach them outside a game, since that is also valuable and fr/so often see a lot of bench and practice time. Perhaps there is some way to get "extra" coaching if actually playing in a game? Maybe being able to coach for a second skill in the same session? I have always found the need to get SBYs and APPs into matches you are also trying desperately to win to be a really challenging and cool aspect of mansging/coaching in United. Here is TMVL, the lineup decisions are easier -- I can pretty much always play my top tier. In United, the push/pull of "win now" vs "build for the future" is present in almost every match. Assuming all my assumptions are correct, and I am not missing something as a rookie TMVL coach, that's my idea.

How about this idea...

We are halfway through the season just to give a benchmark.  I have 4 Freshman that have played in this many sets each:

15, 26, 12, 7

At the end of the season, we have a Freshman (and perhaps Sophomore) coaching session where players can:

1) Each Sets Played (SP) for a player is converted into a CP

2) Improve no more than 1 SL per skill

3) Only improve skills that are not yet maxed out.

Example:

OH Smith who has already improved SRV, RCV, and BLK to the max of 3

If he has the CP (based on 1 for 1 match of sets played) this player could be improved in the skills that they haven't yet maxed out in.

Would this be along the lines of what you were thinking Mike?

I do feel like it may be difficult for some freshman skills to get 'maxed out' given the 10 session approach as it means you can in a normal session just max 3 skills plus add 1 to another skill.  This isn't optimal for the OH position where 4 skills are used all the time plus DEF mostly (not so much SET).

Thoughts?

This sounds perfect, simple and elegant, Al!
