Schedule
Posted by Steve Turner on Tuesday, Oct. 5th, 2021 at 2:15 PM

Al's asked me to have a look at the schedule and see if I can come up with one that avoids teams playing 2 home or 2 away conference games in the same session. And the short answer is no as the schedule stands.

4 different ideas.

1. Allow 2 home games but make sure the non conference game is away in sessions 4 and/or 5

2. There's one set of fixtures per 7 that cause a problem - these could be played in the same session  but reversed for the second.

3. As 2 but the two sessions at the end of the season.

4. This one I thought of after emailing Al - the 4th session has just 1 conference game rather than 2. As it stands we play 2 games 6 times then 1 then 1. It would be 22212221 instead.

What I should have said is that teams will be randomised. So if 2 was chosen and Quincey played Columbia next season back to back then it would be unlikely to happen the season after.

After two attempts to post reasons why it can't be done and more alternatives that failed due to internet connection then dead battery I had a brainwave and think i might have solved it

Watch this space. Or rather the next one.

I'm guessing you are hitting some obstacles Steve. Whenever someone says something is easy, never believe them.  :-)

After 3 hours last night I think I finally did it. I won't bore you with the details, it's not fair on Al to have to read it again. I've got no teams playing 2 home or 2 away games in the same session and in the first 10 games teams play all the other 7 teams at least once.

The only thing "wrong" is that currently Columbia play St Charles and Carlsbad first session and Quincy and another next. At the half way point we play Antioch and St Charles f9llowd by Carlsbad and Quincy. All conference sessions are slightly different

With this new schedule 4 (or maybe 3 with a tweak) are the same but with home/away switched. So If we play St Charles and Carlsbad in session 1 we play them again in session 4. The tweak would be with one of these 4 split over sessions 7 and 8 where we play 1 conference game.

If you're manually planning out who plays which team in every conference match, who says they have to be sequential?  Could play two teams in session 1 or 2, and then not again until the next-to-last conference session.  In the NFL, there's no set order on when the conference matches have to be played, though they tend to try to save at least one for the final week of the season for every team, often based on who they think the top two teams will be that season in an attempt to have at least one "winner take all" match in the final weekend.

Kevin Martin on Friday, Oct. 8th, 2021 at 3:20 PM

That's kind of how it's going Kevin. With a letter standing for the 4 games in a conference and say A being where 1 plays 2, B being where 1 plays 3 etc. it is something like AB EF CD AB FG CD E G. I've worked out a schedule I'm most happy with and just need to figure in the non conference games making sure the double header non conference weekend doesn't have 2 home games and the two weeks with one conference and one conference game is likewise.

Then it just needs to be approved.

Steve Turner on Friday, Oct. 8th, 2021 at 3:56 PM

And would each season different teams are assigned different letters for the randomization, so that each season the schedule is slightly different?

Mike Halpin on Saturday, Oct. 9th, 2021 at 3:17 AM

Yes, Mike. Al sent me a spreadsheet with the schedule which i've edited and sent back. First game of the season is 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 etc but teams 1 to 16 will be randomised each season.

It does mean that as it is Quincy (1) might play at Baton Rouge (9) inter-conference in week 9 (I need to look it up buy am on the phone) and next season this fixture is reversed.

With the change Quincy could be anything from 1 to 8 and Baton Rouge 9 to 16. They still play each other but might not be week 9 and it could be at either place.

I've tried mixing it up a little so some weeks all EC are at home and others just 1 to 4 at home and 5 to 8 away. Further mixing proved impossible - or too complicated to get right so I gave up.

I have 4 weeks (or is it 3 now) to check it thorougly. Even this morning I noticed a typo where team 13 had 2 games and team 10 none in the final session.

Steve Turner on Saturday, Oct. 9th, 2021 at 12:40 PM

Responding to Kevin, I think there's an "unwritten" rule (maybe it's written) that the final week of the season is intra-division. There's another unwritten rule (maybe it's written) that a team shall not play three home games or three road games consecutively. Unless your multi-billion dollar stadium is not finished, or you have a hurricane or such.
