![]() | Top Tips for the Title and the Relegation Chaff Posted by |
Unlike MSWL1 the quality in this division is actually pretty poor. most of the better teams in this League are in the second flight or in the case of Boston, Burton and Tonbridge in division 3! So the question is not so much who will win the league but which of the chaff is going to get relegated!
1: WORKSOP - Let´s say barring some atrocious bad luck or a slew of critical long term injuries that worksop are a shoe in for this year´s league title. With the divisions top T11 at 11.82 and a mountain of cash to bring in some quality replacements no other team come close to giving worksop a run for their money and as mentioned already they have plenty of it! They have an excellent squad with no real weaknesses, an awesome forward line led by Captain Oakes plus penty of midfielders to switch things up a bit tactically to play midfield dom from time to time. The one worrying niggle is the lack of a reserve keeper or sweeper. With the option of falling back on a mid dom strategy then even an injury to David Marsh is not too much of a problem. An injury to Jake Kennedy on the other hand......
2: AFC WIMBLEDON - If anyone can cause Manager Miller and Worksop a problem then it is going to be one of the Unholy Trinity and most likely it will be the Dons. they can employ a good keeper/sweeper combo with decent reserves to fill in if required and they also have a very strong Fw line in Pedersen and Clarke. Captain Luke ´Sky´ Walker has the force in a decent defence that will be hard to beat and with a decent war chest to bag one or two more players to boost that T11 of 11.45 you never know they might just nick a 5th league title.
3: SHEPSHED - Are always a danger as they have an uncanny ability to pull something out of the bag. Attested by an astonshing 11 league titles! they have a top notch attack led by Captain Clifton Drinkwater that will open up most other teams´ defences. They don´t however have much cash to boost that T11 of 11.36 and there is one glaringly big hole in the defence in the crucial sweeper position. Shepshed need to fill this hole urgently and will be looking longingly at lot 4 in this sessions auction. They do also have an app sweeper to bring through, but it is doubtful he will ever meet the required grade at this level and ought to be discarded. If they can get a sweeper then they are back in contention.
4: HYDE - I would not normally give much chance to a team trying to progress a app keeper, but with a T11 of 11.64 they are arguably stronger then most of the other teams in this division and if they can get a long youth cup run under their belt this year, then a chance for a pop at the title opens up. The squad is small but strong in all positions and Manager Oakes does have some cash available to buy more players. Another quality striker would really be a useful buy. Olmec also seems to be favouring them this year drawing Rainworth Miners at home in the FA Cup and both Goole and Rainworth Miners in the AP Cup. Worksop aside this may be their best chance to grab that first league title.
5: Kendal - The last remaining member of the unholy trinity also have a T11 of 11.36 and so can not be discounted but the quad is small and lacks depth. The Forward line is not strong and will rely on the exuberance of youth in McDonald and Thomson. They do havesome cash to rectify these deficiencies but a lot of that cash might have to be outlaid in buying a sweeper as they do not currently have one. they do however have a top top keeper in Dave Green.
6: FCUM - Season goal to avoid relegation. With a T11 of 11.45 they should just do that, whch is important as it will be a blow to any team to get relegated this year as with the quality in the second division future promotion prospects for any team relegated will not be high. FCUM have a decent defence and a strong forward line which is just aswell as the midfield dept is woeful. The hard issue they face though is bringing through a keeper app which is always hard but in this case necessary as the ageing Vinogradov will be retiring next year.
7: BEDFORD - Like FCUM they have a T11 of 11.45 band also a very large squad of bench fillers. They also have an issue with bringing through a app sweeper and as O Donnell the club´s first choice sweeper is not so great then getting game time for Skinner might not be so hard. The youngster is likely to become first choice before too long. There is also a decent midfield to switch to a Mid Dom tactic so Compo has options other teams may not have.
8: DROYLSDEN - Once again look like being in a relegation dogfight and Manager Gittins is well expereinced in avoiding relegation. they have a knack of winning the crucial dogfight battles. they have a big squad but not a lot of cash to add some quality to boost the T11 of 11.27.
9: AFC RUSHDEN - Another big squad and could do with a little bit more quality depth in the Mf and Fw positions to strengthen the T11 of 11.27. Unlike Droylsden they are also trying to bring through a sweeper app in Azevedo which may be their undoing this season.
10: ILKESTON - As Brian Connolly used to say "Are you ready Steve?" We think maybe not as Ilkeston look set for relegation with a T11 of under !! and an app sweeper to bring through in little Shrimpton. They have a decent defnce and might be able to grind out a few goaless draws by parking the bus and playing defensively at home. The aged Steven Lawrence has been made club Captain in a desperate attempt to boost the forward line, but it is going to cost a lot of CP´s to get this oldie fully fit and Manager turner will be desperately hoping his fitness lasts the course of the season as an injury will be disastrous. Good Luck!

It's difficult to see how anyone dethrones Worksop, barring injury.

Nice workup, Vick! Can't complain about his take on our squad. I thought we were getting relegated last season, and just escaped. Will be fortunate to do the same this season as well.

What sort of manager votes against himself? A realist, I suppose. I've always been a dreamer.
