Northampton and the 3rd Division
Posted by Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 2012 at 2:16 AM

If you look up "personality" in the dictionary you will find this photo:

Can Compo recover from his drop to the 3rd Division and actually get promoted this season?   Or is this another season of disappointing results in league play and MULTIPLE visits by the Chairman?  What's your take?

I'm just not seeing it this season...

Allan Sellers on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 2012 at 2:16 AM

Simon does know we don't do draft picks in this league, right?  So the lower finishing team doesn't get better Sbys next season.  Just making sure...

Kevin Martin on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Hey, like it Al and Kevin, thats a better idea though to have draft picks though, mines a sch 10 GK please.

And boy i feel privelaged to be considered a personality!!

Simon Compton on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 PM

Team's way too strong... if Northampton doesn't get promoted, Compo may want to dust off his resume. =)

Rob Peterson on Wednesday, Jan. 4th, 2012 at 3:20 AM

Compo has been leading this Northampton team down the chute a few seasons now.  Any chance we can create a 4th division just for him?

Brian Beerman on Wednesday, Jan. 4th, 2012 at 8:01 AM

Relegated to MLS, Brian?

Kevin Martin on Wednesday, Jan. 4th, 2012 at 7:22 PM

With all due respect (and disrespect) for Compo in this thread, it actually raises a separate point which I have been wanting to make:

We currently track lifetime achievement by number of Wins, a good measure by any standard.  But it also does not account for teams who are able to maintain a high level of consistency.  For example, my boys at LIN have played ay high D2/low D1 for a number of seasons now, never close to D3 relegation.  Yet to look at the lifetime achievements, teams like LIN do not get recognized for that consistency.  Compo has many more Wins than us, for example, and that's all we count.

Note it's not the recognition we are after (who am I kidding?), but maybe more/new interesting ways to track who the best teams are over time.  A team that spends a lot of time in D3 can certainly rack up a lot of wins!

C-B(r)a(w)ll

I actually have to agree with C-Ball on this one. (it should pain me more than it did...)

C-Ball, myself, and other quality managers like us should be recognized for being better than Compo and not having our teams relegated to D3.

(hope everyone takes this post with the humor that was intended)

Rob Peterson on Thursday, Jan. 5th, 2012 at 4:17 PM

I agree, everyone should be recognized equally.  Let's stop tallying wins and losses so that we all feel good about ourselves regardless of match outcomes.

Al...Is there any way we can award each team a gold star at the end of every season?  Or perhaps a blue ribbon that states, "You're great!"

Brian Beerman on Thursday, Jan. 5th, 2012 at 5:28 PM

If people are looking for a way to be better than Compo, I guess that says something about Compo's history of performance if he's the one they're trying to beat!  Notice that no one is looking for new and interesting ways to compare themselves to Alon though....

Realistically, in response to Mike's comment, if you wanted a way to measure long-term performance at the highest level, just go with Division 1 wins and winning percentage.  In any other league, no one counts minor league wins in overall discussions of managerial and coaching greats.  It's only what you did in the big league that counts.

So just taking Division 1 wins in this league, here's how you'd stack up by that measure for Mike & Simon, and two of Mike's main rivals:

SImon Compton with NOR.  6 seasons in Division 1.  Highest finish: 2nd (5 times).  Overall record: 51-26-31.  Winning percentage: .593.  4 seasons at 10+ wins.

Mike Cabral with LIN.  4 seasons in Division 1.  Highest finish: 5th.  Overall record: 20-20-32.  Win %: .417.  Most wins in one season: 6.

Rob P with PLY.  5 seasons in Division 1.  Highest finish: 4th (twice).  Record: 30-23-37.  Win %: .461.  Most wins in one season: 8.

Brian with BHA.  3 seasons in Division 1 (season 2 was under a different manager).  Record: 29-7-18.  Win %: .602.  Best finish: 1st (season 9), with 13 wins, their only season with 10+ wins in Div 1.

Overall, I would like to recognize Mike as perhaps the greatest Division 2 manager to date!  Only the Imps have won Division 2 twice, and only one other team (CRD under 2 different managers) has been promoted to Division 1 three separate times.

If looking for the shortest list of greatness, you could also go for this one:

NEVER RELEGATED

The obvious one: Alon at TRA

The repeat riser without falling: Al at BRE & DOR

The quietly nefarious Rob B at CRE

And our elder statesman, David Blair at WES

Everyone else who has been with their team at least three seasons has either been relegated at least once or has never made it out of Div 3 yet.

Kevin Martin on Thursday, Jan. 5th, 2012 at 11:55 PM

As always Kevin, a great post, i love the 1st paragraph, maybe we here at Northampton should remain quiet, go about our business in a Tranmere/Manutd way, no talking to the press, maybe many would like that! Thats not us though, think Mourinho!

Remind me boys (Mike and Brian)  I have some medals here at home ( some as big as dustbin lids) and i will ship them over when its your birthdays, give you something to celebrate and remember me by always!!

As always, said with love and affection!

Simon Compton on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 2012 at 12:04 AM

I hope not as that would give me a chance of promotion :)
