Participation is always an interesting topic in any league. Many of us play in multiple leagues and often its our personal preference as to which ones we might be more active in than others.
One of the items I need to do is revamp the categories we give the participation bonus for as some have changed over the years and others have been added.
I'm opening this topic as a potpourri for ideas on what changes (if any) you'd like to see made to this.
Right now my opinion is that the participation level is pretty good. I don't sense that participation is ever "forced" in that people are "just typing a couple words for the money". I like that.
Currently we give out a maximum of 10k per session. The open questions that come to mind include:
1) Should that number be higher? Or is it fine where it is?
2) Is there anything we could do to get the folks that participate less to comment more? And I'm phrasing that intentionally to be non-confrontational as I'm not necessarily looking to kick people out if they don't comment. I'd first like to understand what might motivate people to get more involved in the discussion.
3) I think David Blair suggested once that in the reminder emails I send I should include the participation bonus a team would receive for this session so far. Would that be helpful?
4) Should we branch out the bonus further? Should the folks that participate more get a slight GPP bonus for example?
My caveats are that I don't want participation to be/feel forced and I don't want to setup any rich get richer plans. BUT, I think a good league needs solid participation and I want to keep it that way and where possible improve it further.

Well to start the ball rolling I'd like to sugest a 10k Bonus for anybody that ridicules PRESTON NORTH END or relates an embarassing story about their manager Dr Ian 'Van' Lindsay
I'm okay with it as is. If folks want to increase it a little, that's fine. But one of the big complaints that non-MWSL managers had when we first brought this topic up in the very first season was that they didn't want to feel forced to post out of fear that other teams were getting richer.
I think the current bonus for participation is perfect; not too much, but just enough to encourage some participation for those who might not otherwise write much.

Anyway, it's definitely not broke, so no fixing required. We'll gloss over the idea that something as important as GPP would be allocated for participating...
I'd maybe at most add a 2k bonus for voting in the coaches' poll. However I'm not entirely sure the coaches' poll is working right now? Are we voting for sesh 1 or 2?
Thanks for the feedback so far. The general trend seems to be "no need to change", but I'd like to hear from more folks.
John: I did have to make an adjustment but for now its called the "session 2" poll as we're in "session 2" from a software standpoint. Might not be terribly intuitive, but that's my answer. :-)
A few of the other leagues have a press officer to put some human judgement on it and reward managers who are truly doing interesting things participation wise. That seems to work nicely and allows for some larger bonuses when really deserved (Roy mentions SANC, this is how it works there).
Although I haven't had time to be one myself, it does seem that the quality posters (not just quantity) should be recognized, not in an extreme way, but something more than current.
