Pretty much the standard formation at least up to the 1950s was 2-3-5 or 3-2-5.  Before the 2-3-5, there was the 1-1-8!.  For those interested in such things I recommend Johnathon Wilson's book Inverting the Pyramid.

Is that 2-3-5? I thought it was 2-3-2-3 with 5 midfielders.

The WM -  2-3-2-3 -  evolved from the 2-3-5. A bit earlier than I originally said in the 1930s. It was Herbert Chapman's great innovation at Huddersfield and Arsenal  The inside FWs were withdrawn to make the 2, advanced midfielders, but these were still listed as inside FWs.   This developed into the 4-2-4 and continued to the 4-5-1 so prevalent today in modern football via 4-3-3 and 4-4-2.
