General questions to get us started:
- How many auctions should there be, assuming 10 sessions per season?
- How many "lots" should be offered per auction?
- What sort of player mix should be offered (Age / SL) ?
- Should CPs be offered?
- Should Backroom Boys be offered?
- Should Cup "byes" be offered?

Ok heres my opinions assuming 30 teams & 3 divisions
8 Auctions :
10 Lots per auction : 7 players : 1 Backroom Boy : 1 lot of CP's : 1 Lot of GPP's
Parameters
Players : 2 x AGE 1(Level 5 - 8) : 2 x AGE 2 (Level 6 - 9) : 2 x AGE 3 ( Level 7 - 10) : 1 x AGE 4 (Level 8 - 11)
Backroom Boy : Level 1 ( Coach/Yth Coach/Groundsman/Physio)
CP's : ( 10 - 20)
GPP : ( 5 - 15)

With only 10 sessions, would 8 auctions be too many? That would mean a pure constant stream of players and resources throughout the season. I was thinking that 4 or 5 would be more appropriate.
I'm thinking that there should be
- 6 players (2 Age 1, 2 Age 2, 1 Age 3, 1 Age 4) with SL levels equal to what Dave has proposed
- 1 lot of CPs
- 1 backroom boy (in 1/2 of the auctions)
- 1 lot of GPPs (in 1/2 of the auctions)

Considering the structure of the league and the number of CP's available I would suggest in terms of players every team should be able to win at least one at auction during the season so I suggest 4 players per session. Also there should be a much larger close season auction with 30+ lots.
It is also important to include variations such as SBY level 3 in an early session as a possible future star for example.
This is also the opportunity to introduce specials such as WG, FB, AMF, DMF, LK etc. and also players with special characteristics such as APP's who can play in all games.
Just a few thoughts, but this will be a major area in how the GM controls the levels in the game.

Personally I dont like SB's or APP's in these auctions
If you want a SB or APP just get one (you can get 6 of each per season)![]()
& I think the multi positional players should have to earn the status by qualification
But I do like the Large Close Season Auction sugestion![]()
My proposals would create 56 new players per season
Rob's would create 24 - 30 ...............................................
Im not sure about Trevs as he does not specify number of auctions or how many of the 30 closes season lots would be players?

To clarify.
10 Auctions of 4 players + 20 in close season and a good smattering of back room boys.
The reason for the APP's and SBY's would only be to create future stars which could attain a higher total level if coached to the max !
I think it will also be important to give benefits on transfer of players to lower divisions as the game becomes more established.

Thanks guys for the feedback!
Trevor, you seem to like the close season auction (must be a facet of the real United). Can you discuss this further and why its important/needed/useful/etc.
We're more used to the regular auctions tied to regular sessions, so more info would help.
Thanks,
Al
PS: For Specials, I'd definitely consider them for season 2+. Perhaps a separate thread to discuss them?

Alan,
The close season auction is good value in several respects. It gives the GM a chance to take quite a large amount of money out of the game and also having taken an overview of how the season has played out regulate the total number of skill levels of players across the game.
It also gives players a good opportunity to spend excess cash to avoid taxation. This is probably not going to affect the game initially but as the weeks go by will become more of an issue. Remember Hopscotch discussions on too much money in the game.
PUMA and TOTL generally spend about £75,000,000 in the close season auction which regulates the cash in the game quite well.
Another nice thought would be to hold a live close season auction. I think this would be great fun, if a suitable day andtime can be arranged. I have to attend auctions from time to time through my work and the buzz you get is really wonderful when you are bidding on a lot !

I wasn't sold on the notion of a close-season auction until I read Trevor's idea of holding it Live (which would work via Parachat ala Cup Draws I presume). I think that's a GREAT idea.

How is this done elsewhere?
Is it 'just after aging' or 'just before aging'? In other words are the players on offer 'about to be aged'.
Al

Auction players are always listed at the level and age they will be for the following season so this is always done after aging.
Generally on Transfer lists, they close two thirds of the way through the season and don't open again until after aging.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the clarification...I believe I've ensured that is in the latest rules too similar to what you've indicated.

2 Questions:
- Is there a set formula for determining the Reserve Bid on an auction player?
- I would have expected the Age IV players to have the 8-14 SL range and the Age II & III players to have the 7-13 range (or potentially 5/6-11/12). Any reason why the Age II/III were created higher?

Well...
I decided to read a great forum post by a certain Rob Peterson....
That post cited that IIs and IIIs would be higher in SL than IVs.
In addition, for season 1 (or season I), I'm being VERY conservative in terms of not introducing really high SLs...maybe too much so...but I'll err on the low SL versus higher SL for now.
