![]() | Selling Players in an Auction Posted by |
Hi guys,
One of the topics we kicked around in the Season 2 survey was the ability to sell players in the auction (or a 'separate one'). We had 12 folks say yes to the idea, 7 say maybe, and 6 nays.
I'd like to have a little discussion on it here to see if its feasible. I think the main concern people had was "people will just throw out a bunch of bad players". So maybe the notion was a) bad players and b) too many players...I think that was the point made at least.
Well for bad players, as we've found out...all players have some value (and can help the CP bottom line by providing 1 CP a week even if they are IV/2 players).
Here's what I'd like to hear...
Some proposals on how this would work. It doesn't have to be 100% comprehensive but would be helpful to know things like:
- what 'this' is called (Transfer List Auction...not sure that's a great name...so what's a good name)?
- how many players can a team can put in this auction?
- how many 'transfer list' players can a team bid on?
- can reserve prices be set? Should the by? Or if a player is worth 320k and I'm the only one to bid 320k is he mine? Maybe no reserve prices means less of a 'flood of players' as with more available...less higher prices?
- when this auction occurs? Just after the regular one (back to back)? On Sunday (next day)? etc...
Again, I'm not making guarantees we'll do this, but while we have a break now's the time to see if there's some consensus on this around a certain approach (whatever that is)...and if so perhaps I can get it added.
Thanks,
Al

First, I propose calling it a "Free Agent List."
Second, I suggest running it directly after matches (see below) and immediately after the regular auction since I would hate to have filled slot #30 on my team with a pure CP scrub when I could have a T11 or T16 contributor or a player to build for the future with instead.
Two potential problems with proposed solutions:
1) When players have to be listed by. If I can only get to a computer on Thursday or late Friday, very few people will have a chance to see my players and I won't get many or any bids for my listed players. If I can only get free time on a computer Saturday night or early Sunday, there will be hardly any players listed for me to bid on if people don't post them until Monday or later in the week.
My proposed solution is to have the Free Agent list every other week (sessions 2, 4, 6). Session 1, 3, 5 will be the deadline to get players submitted for the list. Then every manager will have an entire week with their players posted along with everyone else's, while also ensuring that everyone gets the same time to look for players on the list. It will be just like the regular auction with that regard to time available to review and bid.
Any other advantage to the early deadline? Glad you asked!
2) We run the Free Agent auction right after the regular auction, which follows regular matches. We have to run it then, or else if you have a player bought and pulled from your team then any lineups you entered would be undone. If you got lineups in on Saturday and the auction ran Sunday, you could lose a player and the orders page gets wiped. Not good for those with little time during the week to re-enter everything.
By running the auction right after matches though, we run the risk of having bids in on a player who sufferred a horrible injury in the match and end up with a Fit -4 or worse on our roster now. We can't even get CP from them, let alone play them for two or more sessions. We'd never bid on a player like that if we knew the injury prior to the final sale. It's wasting money.
So the early deadline helps because it locks in a player on the Free Agent List (he can't be played that week so you know what you're getting) and prevents lineup problems of a player being added or removed when lineups are free to be entered (the auction runs before the site comes back up to allow next week's lineups to be done).

I do not have the ability (or time) to provide a comprehensive assessment like Kevin, but it seems to me this overall idea is just a more complex form of trading players.
Since trading functionality works fine from what I have seen, I do not see how this is a necessary addition to the game/league.

While I wouldn't throw out the word "necessary," I think this could be a good way of getting more managers to post some players for sale. It should also inspire more managers to make bids on players advertised for sale, as any given week there would be the definite chance of finding some player that could make your team a little bit better.

Eh. I'm admittedly a crotchety fellow but I don't know when I'd ever use this feature. MSWL-United isn't really designed to sell players for two reasons: the CP advantage which comes with keeping a large squad, and cash is pretty much only good for auctions (as opposed to CP buys as in OLMEC).
I don't think it's a bad idea but it'd be better suited for a game which utilizes offseason "free agency" (where teams bid on out of contract players) which MSWL-U is not.

At first thought, I think I agree with John. I like the idea, but I don't necessarily know how much use it will have with the benefits of keeping the larger squads. Since the last poll was done in Season 2, I wonder if it's not a good idea to take a new poll. Managers theoretically know more about how the game functions at this point - particularly concerning the CP gain for each fit, non-youth player. That may change some of their opinions.
